From a BAFTA-winning short to a debut feature documentary and a new scripted film, Matt Houghton is entering an exciting new chapter.

In our latest POV, Matt reflects on winning the BAFTA for This Is Endometriosis, the creative freedom of following his instincts, and why he’s trying to focus on the things he feels drawn to rather than feeling driven by them.

He also shares how writing, walking and putting his phone away help create space for new ideas, alongside inspiration from films and conversations such as @thenourish.community podcast, hosted by @jbregel

Directed by Ché Scott-Heron Newton (@heronche__ ), MUREWA follows two childhood best friends who grew up skating together in a small English coastal town until life sends them down very different paths. Built entirely from five years of home video, it’s a beautiful look at friendship, growing up, and the bonds that hold us together.

MUREWA screened at DOC NYC 2025 as part of Shorts: Heartbeats and was selected for the @nonfictionhotlist x @yahoo documentary shorts initiative.

Too often the inclusion of queer narratives in the British and Irish film landscape are isolated to urban tales of found family, illicit activity and a general modern vs traditional culture dichotomy. While this represents vast populations of the queer society, it excludes the ‘ones left behind’; those that don’t want to trade their relationship with the land for their relationship with those they love. This programme investigates the nuance, pain and joy that exists for queer people in rural places in the British Isles.

This quiet, moving rumination on loneliness and newfound intimacy was heralded as “the first great film of the Brexit era”. This film's authenticity, which is both tender and brutal, displays a juxtaposition of landscape and emotion, and centrally explores the question of what it means to be a man, to be queer, and to be a person of the land.

Last night was a beautiful way to begin our four-city “This Is Endometriosis” screening tour across Canada.

The film itself is extraordinary. Beautifully filmed, visually stunning, and deeply human. It is raw, tender, honest, and incredibly moving.

A heartfelt thank you to @georgiewileman for sharing her own experience of living with endometriosis and for creating something that helps bring the realities of this disease into clearer view. Through powerful storytelling and breathtaking imagery, the film captures both the challenges of living with endometriosis and the resilience of those who navigate it every day.

Endometriosis affects an estimated 190 million people worldwide, making it one of the most common yet least understood chronic health conditions. I received a message of gratitude for hosting these screenings from someone who said, “I feel so seen.” Those four words capture exactly why conversations like this matter.

What made the evening especially meaningful was the range of people in the room. Teenagers, a 73-year-old attendee, partners, health care providers, and people living with endometriosis all gathered together to learn, listen, and share in a conversation that is long overdue.

My deepest thanks to our incredible Victoria panelists for bringing their expertise, compassion, and thoughtful perspectives to the discussion:
