Brushes against violence: Soweto mural demands action on GBVF

Along one of Soweto’s busiest roads, a new mural uses art to turn an everyday wall into a call to break the silence on gender-based violence and femicide.

On Saturday myself & @broken_afrikaans went to the Mural Event at Bara Hospital in Soweto thanks to @itsnonka and @creativenestlings for organising everything and having us💜

There were a couple artists we met while there and it was good to see the community come show support for the message🟣🟣🟣

Yesterday I was in Soweto, outside Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, where we painted the walls purple as part of our continued call to raise awareness and amplify the fight against GBVF.

Joined by 30 mural artists and community members, in an initiative organised by @itsnonka of @creativenestlin, we used art to make a powerful statement.

The call to end gender-based violence must be heard from every corner of society and echoed by leaders at every level.

Enough is enough!

MORE ACTION IS NEEDED — AND WE CAN’T DO IT WITHOUT YOU. 💜

South Africa is facing a national GBVF crisis. We need more awareness, more conversations, and most importantly, more visible action in our communities.

On 3 October 2026, our team & together with friends, fellow artists, and our community invite you to join us in Soweto as we work towards creating the longest GBVF awareness mural in Africa.

⏰ From 10AM

This is more than painting a wall. It’s about taking action, remembering lives, breaking the silence, and standing together to say: ENOUGH.

The mural will carry the names of women whose lives have been lost to GBVF. We will say their names. We will honor them. We will remember them.

You don’t need to be an artist. Just show up, pick up a brush, and make your mark. 💜

SAY THEIR NAMES. BREAK THE SILENCE. TAKE ACTION.
