A poem inspired by my courageous friend, @itssaly_son , for Remington, and most especially, for our beautiful oak trees.

ACORNS
By Hillary Gonzalez

On my block, I’ve been collecting acorns
from the trees that once were,
so the children on my street,
who grew alongside the Scarlet Oaks,
can steward new trees into becoming.

I listen to podcasts about invitations
on becoming more human–
on how the human eye resembling
the nebulas in our cosmos
is no coincidence–
on how the lines on the palms
of our hands so closely
resemble the veins of leaves,
because one day, long ago,
it was simply known
that this was the design of creation.

I’ve been listening to poets
draw up scalding words from the
marrow within their bones,
and the breath once gifted to them
by the stumps of our oak trees,
in hopes their words will echo louder
than the chainsaws and their
unrelenting quest for imperialism.

I do this because,
there is a hope that burns
within me even now.
If an acorn can carry the hope
of an entire neighborhood–
please–
plant some with me.
