Black Love Day began right here in Washington, D.C., in 1993. 💜 On October 29, we’re honored to welcome its founder, Sekou Mama Ayo Handy-Kendi ( @ayohandykendibreathe), to Black Love in All Its Forms, the finale of our fall Defining Love Community Salon series. Mama Ayo is also the author of The Black Love Book, and her decades of work have encouraged people to embrace love for the Creator, Self, Family, Community, and Black Diaspora. The evening will be hosted by DC filmmaker Zoë Poindexter (@zealouszee_), founder of Black Love Documentary LLC and director/producer of Defining Love: Voices of Black D.C. Together, we’re bringing the documentary’s exploration of Black love into conversation with the woman who founded the holiday that inspired it. Join us for a screening of the documentary’s proof of concept, a reading from The Black Love Book, and a community conversation featuring Mama Ayo and DC-based romance novelist Nikki Payne, moderated by attorney and creative Warrington Sebree. 📅 Thursday, October 29 | 6:30–8:30 PM 📍 Busboys and Poets — Anacostia 🎟️ Free and open to the public! Register through the link in our bio. #BlackLoveDay #DefiningLove #BlackLoveDocumentary #BlackLove #WashingtonDC

Why host community conversations around documentary films that are still in progress? During the September 22 opening of the Defining Love Community Salon series, filmmaker Zoë Poindexter, founder of Black Love Documentary LLC (@BlackLoveDocFilm), shared the purpose behind bringing audiences into the filmmaking process. The salons create space for people to reflect on the themes of Defining Love: Voices of Black D.C. and A Revolution Called Love, share their perspectives, and help inform what comes next while the films are still taking shape. 💜 #BlackLove #DefiningLove #DCfilm #crowdfund #WashingtonDC What connects the five tenets of Black Love Day? During our September 22 salon, Warrington Sebree (@itsweslee), attorney and creative, reflected on the relationship between love for the Creator, Self, Family, Community, and the Black Diaspora. Rather than viewing these as separate expressions of love, Warrington describes how they inform one another—particularly how our ability to love ourselves connects to how we love others. We’re excited to welcome Warrington back on October 29 as moderator of Black Love in All Its Forms, the finale of our fall salon series. On September 29, the Defining Love Community Salon series moved from the virtual space into the room at Urban Garden Brewhouse in Washington, D.C. Filmmaker Zoë Poindexter of @BlackLoveDocFilm welcomed guests for an evening of film and conversation, continuing the exploration of what Black love means and how it is practiced in our relationships and communities. With guest speakers and community members gathered together, the salon offered an opportunity to hear different perspectives, ask questions, and reflect on the themes emerging from Defining Love: Voices of Black D.C. 📸 Photo credit: Belinda Shao “Love requires love.” During our September 29 salon at Urban Garden Brewhouse, Tracy Chiles McGhee (@tee_cee_em) reflected on the ongoing work of loving others. Love, she reminds us, requires continuous investigation into what it means in any given moment, with any given person, or in service of any given cause. It requires motion, action, assessment, and discernment. Her reflection moves us
