Joining us this fall from Batesville, Ind. is lifelong Hoosier Tracy McKittrick.

Tracy graduated from Indiana University this spring with Highest Distinction, earning a BSPA in Law and Public Policy from the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs and a minor in history—all in just three years.

During her undergraduate career, Tracy represented IU at the Big Ten Democracy Summit in Washington, D.C., completed honors programs through both the Hutton Honors College and the O’Neill School, and received the Lenkowsky Award for Excellence in Public Affairs Writing. She was also a Direct Admit to the Law School, a Founders Scholar each year, and a Dean’s List student every semester. Her experiences included involvement with the IU Civic Leaders Center and IU Student Government, an internship with the Monroe County Public Defender’s Office, and selection for a U.S. Department of State internship through IU’s Washington Leadership Program.

Tracy’s interest in public service began well before college. In high school, she was selected to represent Indiana in both the United States Senate Youth Program and American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation. She also wrote for her hometown newspaper, where she had her own column, “Tea With T.”

Tracy has wanted to become an attorney for nearly as long as she can remember. Drawn to the law by a desire to help others, she chose Maurer for its rigorous academics, professional opportunities, and welcoming community.

Outside the classroom, Tracy is an avid reader who is always ready with a book recommendation. Welcome to Maurer, Tracy!

O’Neill alum Ava Hartman, BAESS’23, is leading neighborhood tree plantings across Bloomington as executive director of @CanopyBloomington—expanding the city’s urban canopy and advancing environmental equity.

Her work continues to bring O’Neill into the community, with IU students—including those from the Civic Leaders Center—joining volunteers across Bloomington to plant and care for trees.

Some finals are more fun than others.

In Prof. Baggetta’s V181: U.S. Policy & Administration course, Civic Leaders students spent the semester diving into real policy issues and coming up with workable solutions. Along the way, they stress-tested their ideas through fast-paced peer discussions, playing the role of legislative interns on Capitol Hill. Mostly research, but with a dash of improv.

Their final challenge? One-on-one lobbying their professor. With just a few minutes to make their case, can they persuade him to take up their cause--and let them pass? Students in a classroom take part in a lobbying simulation. They sit across a table from each other and are engaged in a discussion.
