so yesterday I saw that today is international friendship day!! 🤝🏾

usually I'd save a post like this for a birthday, but life is short and today is as good a day as any - and September is looking busy anyways!

If you know me irl, you definitely know of Jide. Or at least you've heard his name mentioned - MANY times.

I always feel so blessed when people encourage me about the various projects they've seen me bring to life, and share how my work has inspired or entertained them. It really warms my heart!! 🤍

But when people listen to my music or read my words, they won't see the number of times this guy has picked me up and brushed me off when I've wobbled and fallen, spurred me on to keep going when I've had nothing left in the tank, or been a listening ear for literally every major and minor inconvenience I've faced over the last however many years (there have been a lot).

The transition and growth from years of struggles with my MH, love woes, and self doubt to the confidence I feel today is almost intrinsically linked to the presence of this guy in my life, and his knack for showing up consistently without ever complaining.

I'm sure that in another life we were twins, or perhaps even spouses :)), but in this life we're brothers, who bicker, laugh, philosophise, dance and share with each other and I'm so grateful for our bond!!

We had a phone call yesterday and he told me to get off my ass, stop being scared and start making again, and I know better than to try and argue with a Virgo man, so you'll be hearing from me and @J3TSY VERY soon!

though I've spoken about the book more generally, I've never quite made it as far as sharing its contents on here.

I wrote this 'stained glass windows' five years ago, but given the current spicy state of Britannia you'd think it was penned last week.

For those here who've known me since school days (or uni for that matter) I promise the irony of me teaching secondary students is not lost on me all. (I was quite an energetic child in class, shall we say).

The second photo was taken when I was 13, on the day I was awarded a full academic scholarship. It should have been a joyous day, but as the photo suggests, I was struggling and had been for some time. The following year I had to withdraw.

The next years were challenging, but a journey that I wouldn't change for the world. I met the most amazing friends, discovered my passion for the arts, and went on Countdown!

Now, as an adult, I reflect on my teenage years and smile.

Being invited to an SEND school to speak to a class of boisterous year 10s about creativity and self-expression is incredibly full-circle, and God-willing I'll be doing it more!

I love writing, hosting, performing, curating events, seeing artists shine, and live music. Not easy balancing all of those at the same time, but the juice is always worth the squeeze!

surprised by folks with a spoken word set at @sofarstalbans andd created a core memory (+unofficial Sofar debut?)!

I love poetry DOWN and being able to share the stories behind my first pieces with the people who were there with me as I wrote them (back in my stage fright/covid/breakup era 🤓) was a nuts experience - grateful!🕺🏾
