I’ve recently been awarded grant from the Awesome Foundation - a compensatory reminder to “keep swimming”. While I am encouraged by this institutional H/T, I am emboldened by the opinion of my friends (see above)… my community. That’s THE THEY I listen to most intensely. The executives of my inspiration. . “OUTCHEA has been designed as a radical invitation to (re)introduce Gainesville’s Black community to Florida’s unique natural spaces. OUTCHEA strives to spark intergenerational social cohesion and youth empowerment through experiential/experimental pairings, like ROUGHAGE + RATCHET, where folks are invited to an urban farm to harvest fresh produce followed by a TUBI watch party and a game of GOOD|BAD BLACK MOVIE BINGO, along with a customized popcorn bar inspired by African American foodways. Each site is designed as an ongoing series with a theme (mental health, nutrition, water safety, etc.) and related communal activity.” . Came back from my quick trip to this amazing work waiting for me from the one and only Jared Packard. It’s pretty great when you get to work with such talented people and Jared is no exception. I am honored to steward this work into our home collection and even more honored to have spent 4+ years with Jared as our exhibitions manager at Bemis. Thank you for helping to make our work sing. Jennifer Ling Datchuk's exhibition EAT BITTERNESS closed this weekend. It was an honor to bring Jennifer and her work to Omaha over the past year. Since first seeing her work online to in person at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft and then at her home studio in San Antonio, I have grown more fond of her practice, of her (of course!) and how life changing the work can be. I know this exhibition opened a lot of people's eyes, taught them things about themselves and generally was beloved by so many who spent time with the work. It was a thrill to include so many works that I loved from a distance and also new works, especially "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun", which may now be my favorite (detail, last image). Big shoutout and hug to Jennifer for being amazing and to everyone who helped install and converse around this show, including Jared Packard, Will Anderson, Nick Miller, Jay Spence, Hana Brock, Marco Delgado, Caitlin Cass, Jamie Ho, Lyz Lenz, and Anna Storti. 🥰

Don't miss Public Assembly THIS THURSDAY @bemiscenter: Traditions + Transformations | 7 PM Using Bemis Center’s current exhibitions Presence in the Pause: Interiority and Its Radical Immanence and Jennifer Ling Datchuk: Eat Bitterness as an entry point, this conversation will consider the ways that mediums such as porcelain, clay, and acrylic on canvas simultaneously carry both heritage and cultural memory and histories of oppression.
