What is the art about?

Like a lot of 80’s kids your parents probably introduced you to the Stones or The Beatles and for me Blackbird has always been my favourite song.

Written against the backdrop of the civil rights struggle in America, Blackbird speaks of freedom, overcoming oppression and finding the belief to rise above what holds us back.

For me, it carries another meaning, too. I’ve sung it to my daughter at bedtime since the day she came home. She’s five now, and we sing it together in the car, in happy moments and when we need to feel close. Somehow, Blackbird has become part of our story.

So what’s the point of art?

Perhaps that’s the point, how it connects us through shared experiences while allowing us to find our own meaning from the same piece. It holds history, memories, hope and helps anchor us to the things we sometimes need reminding of.

We are more than our thoughts. More than what the world tells us we are. That we are needed, wanted and worthy, even on the days we struggle to believe it ourselves.

One song. 30 videos. countless meanings.

In own way we are all…

only waiting for this moment to arise.

Four years ago this week we played a five-night residency at @royalalberthall in London. It was the longest running artist residency in the 150 year history of the venue and without doubt the most incredible week of my life.

Massive shout out to the whole band and crew who made it happen.
