Last night at the @madisoncountyarts @jackflamesorokin and I had a wonderful conversation about my Save This Piece project and exhibition. Thanks to all who came out to hear what I had to say and I’m happy to share that I actually had fun talking in front of “a crowd”, (a very friendly one at that). There were several questions that have given me food for further consideration as I think about how the work will live beyond this exhibit, in other locations, and in book form.

We recorded the discussion and it’s now available to watch on YouTube. There’s a link in my bio that will get you to that video.

The exhibit will remain up through 11/14 so if you haven’t been down to the arts council yet you still have time. There’s an second year writing project that all are welcome to contribute a story or a sentence or a few words of your own experience with the prompts that ask, “how has time changed your perspective and/or memory of an important event?”

I’m especially happy to share that my son, Jack Sorokin @jackflamesorokin , will be joining me this Friday evening at 7pm at the @madisoncountyarts to moderate an artist talk about Save This Piece.

Jack is a photographer and filmmaker who, like me, spent time working in Marshall following Hurricane Helene. We both picked up our cameras during the recovery, but what we were drawn to photograph was quite different.
That difference feels like an interesting place to begin a conversation.

We’ll explore the ways photography helps us witness and make sense of our experiences, how my own work has evolved over the years, and why themes of loss, memory, and repair continue to find their way into what I make.

We’ll also talk about the community voices that have become such an important part of this project, and my hopes for its future as a book.
I hope you’ll come spend the evening with us. There will be time for your questions and reflections, too.

We are thrilled to welcome back Resident Artist Yoon Hwang. @onggihouse is an American artist born in Busan, South Korea. Beginning his practice in two-dimensional art, he eventually became interested in ceramics as a companion to his drawing and painting practice. He combines traditional ceramics techniques, western art, eastern art, and modern visual language to create works that are reminiscent of nature and ancient art. He earned his BFA in Ceramics at California State University Long Beach and his MFA in Studio Art at the University of Georgia. Prior to starting his MFA program, he studied abroad in S. Korea at Hongik University and completed apprenticeships under ceramic artist Inchin Lee and one of Korea’s living national treasures, Kim II Man, at his Obuza Onggi Factory. A husband and father of two, he is currently practicing his art in Southern California.

Yoon has been a dear friend and advisor to T10. The influence of his unwavering support during times of doubt can not be overstated. We are so excited to have him lighting it up this fall!
