Coral munching starfish, with attitude!

Taramea / crown of thorns starfish belong on these reefs. They’re native, and at low densities they feed selectively on the fast-growing corals. The trouble starts when their numbers surge.

We joined to help @grow_aitutaki Kōi Taramea project on the outer reef along the western side of the island. The crew is largely local kids aged 11 to 15, and they’ve removed hundreds and hundreds of Taramea already!

Peter is one of the most inspiring and generous people I’ve been fortunate to spend time with. He started lifeguarding when he was 17 in 1984, and has spent most of his life dedicated to developing water safety skills within his East Coast community. He is a beacon of the community and a beautiful friend and teacher to us.

Beyond his mahi patrolling and training the community, Peter has been involved in the nationwide resurgence of waka ama and waka tere, and provides training for local kura kaupapa and teachers up the East Cape to build water safety skills and become lifeguards themselves.

Ngā mihi for all you do for this community and Tangaroa @peterwboyd66 💛♥️
