Labour MP for Burton and Uttoxeter 🌹
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I have been deeply disturbed, and quite frankly upset, by some cases that have been raised with me by constituents who are suffering in so much pain.

So I have written to the Chief Exec of University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust raising concern around the poor provision of health care for many women across South Derbyshire.

Joining me are Jacob Collier MP and Dave Robertson MP for Lichfield, Burntwood and the Villages who share my concerns in East Staffordshire.

Yesterday, our petition was debated in Parliament!
I have good news and some bad news ⬇️

My petition calls for:
• Anyone convicted of animal abuse to be automatically banned from owning animals in the future.
• The creation of a national register of convicted animal abusers, accessible to regulated charities such as the RSPCA, local authorities, verified rescue organisations, veterinary practices, licensed breeders and licensed pet sellers.

The good news is that all MPs in attendance spoke in support of strengthening animal welfare legislation and they provided clear examples to showcase why they believe changes to the current legal framework are needed. The bad news is at the end of the debate, the Government’s response was delivered by Stephen Morgan, Minister of State at DEFRA. Speaking on behalf of the Government, he reiterated the position already set out in the written response on the government petition page. In a nut shell, DEFRA believes the UK’s existing animal welfare legislation is robust and that creating a national register of convicted animal abusers is not justified because, in their view, “the risks would outweigh the benefits.”

This response is DEVASTATING but it’s not the end of our campaign. I am urging DEFRA to reconsider its position and for Stephen Morgan, and Baroness Hayman to consider all of the arguments made yesterday that clearly prove the gaps in our current legal framework. 240,000 people signed this petition. MPs across the political spectrum gave their time to debate and support it. Animal welfare organisations, charities and professionals continue to raise concerns about gaps in our current animal welfare legislation. Why does DEFRA continue to dismiss us and the evidence? #animalwelfare #ukpolitics #politics #uk #defra
