POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
On April 12, 2026, we took on the Wild Buffalo Relay race, a 32-mile channel crossing from Catalina Island to Newport Beach, CA. Our team completed the entire 32-mile paddle in 6.5 hours, iron-man style, with a goal to raise funds and awareness for We Are Ocean, a nonprofit that helps cancer survivors and warriors heal through ocean-based adventures, camps, and experiences that foster community, growth, and healing.

Every dollar raised goes directly toward sponsoring future campers and helping keep the We Are Ocean mission alive.

Thank you to our sponsors: Shmaze Custom Coatings, Argos Home Systems, @unsungbrewing, @westcoastfirestopping, @tony.pepperoni.pizzeria, @florence_marine_x, @thecrabcooker, and @m_experiment

Thank you to our friends, family, and everyone who donated and supported this effort. Your generosity helped make a real impact and directly supports future We Are Ocean campers.

Thank you to @jamesf562 and Rob for coaching us along the way and donating your time and energy. We could not have done it without you.

Thank you to @newportaquaticcenter and @nac_weareocean for believing in us and trusting us to represent your mission.

And most importantly, thank you @jacoshimanaco. Your impact is still carrying people forward. This one was for you. 🚩

We Are Ocean 2026 @nac_weareocean

What an incredible event.🙏🙌🏽

This is a melding of the surf and paddling community; in support of the cancer community. It’s a powerful intersection.

The goal was too “have fun and do good.” And that’s exactly what we did.

An incredible night of icons and good friends all focused on honoring leaders in the surf community and supporting those battling cancer.

Richard “Wooly” Woolcot @woolair founder of Volcom @volcom and Chris Carter @chriscarter1013 creator of the X-Files (and much much more) were recognized as our 2026 guests of honor.

Our amazing co-hosts @bobhurley and #DannyKwock were amazing and wildly fun and as charismatic as always.

Surf legends and industry icons; guest speakers @shauntomson and @paulnaude were so so so inspiring as always. Incredible to have these guys share their stories.

A chat and showing from Danny Way @dannyway was an inspiring addition.

A huge thanks to all the incredible fundraising. There was a lot. 💪🏽These funds will support the cancer community through immersive camps and adventures in the ocean, in nature and with deep camaraderie.

A giant thank you to Ethan Wayne @travelingwithfinn and Greg Graber @greg280267 of the
the @johnwaynecancerfoundation for their BIG surprise donation that will cover the cost of a full WAO camp on Catalina Island. Amazing! 🙌🏽

We again honored the visionary behind @nac_weareocean , Jack Marshall Shimko @jacoshimanaco who we lost earlier this year. He would be very proud. ❤️

I have to pinch myself that I’ve been the MC of this event for the last two years. Surrounded by friends and people that I have looked up to for most of my life… it’s pretty amazing; and I could not be more proud of the contributions of this group.

An incredible night. 🥹
And it never too late to support the incredible work of @nac_weareocean if you’re inspired to do so. 🫶🏽

“Miss you, Jack — feeling so lucky we had the last 15 years with you, even though doctors said you only had five. When you called me to tell me that your new diagnosis was bad and you were “f*cked,” I could only laugh because you had said that so many times before. I knew that meant we would have more time with you.

But we didn’t, and now here we are—you leave a gaping hole in the world and in our hearts. Now your inspiration is even greater, though. Because now we have to live up to your huge legacy.

We are so proud of you, @jacoshimanaco You were always a good friend and will always be a cancer survivor.

Love you, Jack, for your giant role in making our film Between Two Harbors a reality—for sharing your Paddle2Live story of paddling 260 miles through the Channel Islands, determined that the salt water could help you and others in the @nac_weareocean program beat cancer.”

Keep posted for a commemorative Jack Shimko / @nac_weareocean screening event at the @lidotheaternewportbeach in April. Thank you @jakehoward76 and @surfer_magazine for your support on this special event coming soon. Jack was a Surfer mag “Agent of Change” winner in 2012.

“We also know how proud you were of your partnership between @florence_marine_x and We Are Ocean, the non-profit you founded to help others with cancer experience salt water adventure and ocean healing.”

Grateful for our courageous cast members who joined Jack in our award-winning feature doc Between Two Harbors; @nytimes best seller Dr. J. Nichols, who contributed vital ocean-healing science @getbluemind ; @newportaquaticcenter for the great work growing the WAO program; and @punkerpat and @bobhurley for supporting Jack’s heroic efforts from the start. Special thanks to producer @giovannehelou and PR @atay_pollyp

Love to Jack’s mom, Sally, brother, Matt, and his family for their support—and too many more to name.
