Jacques Renault - On The Prowl Presents: OTP Party Breaks 2
Label: On The Prowl
Year: 2010

Four sucker punch edits that zig and zag from late-night house gems to rhythmic, tribal boogies to sultry, R&B-infused disco ballads.

2018 meets 2010. Neither is the oldest thing here.

Eighteen records in one hour, all of them at 128 BPM. The oldest is from 1980, and the samples buried inside them go back further than that.

We open with Saxyness. Never Dull put it out in 2018 and built it around a saxophone line that has absolutely no business being that greasy. It is a lot of sax. It is in the title. Nobody was misled.

Then Beam Me Up. Permanent Vacation, 2010, and it was Midnight Magic's debut single, which is frankly absurd when you hear it. Half the players came out of the Hercules & Love Affair live band, so the groove is essentially a conspiracy of session musicians. Resident Advisor called it the label's most ecstatic moment and they were not exaggerating.

Two grooves and barely a vocal between them, which means you can hold the blend for as long as you like without anything fighting for the top end. You warm a room up before you make it sing.

Swipe for the other sixteen. Stay until the last one, because I have something to say about that record.

I found a loop and lost my mind.

I have never found so many usable loops inside one record. Midnight Magic's Beam Me Up is my favourite sound in this entire hour. You can see me smiling here.

So I grabbed a piece of it, set a loop, and rode it across the whole of the next track, which is Kylie Minogue's Love at First Sight in the Kid Creme Vocal Dub. Kid Creme is a Belgian house producer and that dub came out on Parlophone in 2002. It isn't the pop single with a house beat bolted underneath it either. He rebuilt the whole thing on top of Indeep's "Last Night a D.J. Saved My Life" from 1982.

So what's actually happening here is a 2010 disco loop, riding a 2002 Belgian house dub, sitting on a 1982 record about a DJ saving somebody's life. I planned none of it and I'm taking full credit.

Somewhere underneath all of that, Indeep are still insisting a DJ saved somebody's life. Seemed rude to argue.

The track had already finished. I brought it back anyway.

The original plan was the Kylie dub straight into Lady. Then I worked out how well Beam Me Up loops, changed my mind, and decided to come out of that instead with a saxophone loop as t

wine and music party at nightmoves this wednesday :)

very excited to host our friend toshiya of @studiomule / @mulemusiq this wednesday 7/08 and early thursday. if you’re not familiar with studio mule - it’s one of our favorite listening bars in tokyo where the wine is taken every bit as seriously as the records and the taste level in both is unparalleled. on wednesday, toshiya will select some special wines to open from our cellar with nightmoves wine director @_derektolson. In the early hours, toshiya will be playing all japanese music and then later in the night will mix it up a bit with longtime nightmoves selector @jacquesrenault .

this is a really special one. come early for easier entry, but we will be hangin all night. 🥂 🍷
