I was so thrilled to learn that three of the mokuhanga prints I made while at MI-Lab last year - the initial colour proof of my bonsai tree and a mounted diptych of my Kyoto lanterns - have been included in the exhibition “Echizen Washi & Contemporary Mokuhanga”, which opened Saturday, July 11 at the Takefu Auditorium Memorial in Echizen.

The exhibition consists of three parts: a showcase of new works printed on Echizen *washi* paper by 16 Japanese artists, a celebration of the 30th anniversary of MI-Lab’s water-based woodblock printmaking residency, and a Japan-India printmaking exchange project. I’m honoured that my work was chosen for display as part of the 30th anniversary portion, alongside my residency colleagues Khadijah Morley @peenutbuttahbabe & Marta Di Bitetti @marta.dibitetti , as well as several of our instructors, including @hiroko_tamura_ & @asukatsutsumi_ .

Thank you so much to Asuka-san for taking the photos to share with all of us too far away to visit in person.❤️ And thank you to MI-Lab - Sato-san & @keikoba36 - for your ongoing support & encouragement.🙏

Should you find yourself in Japan, the exhibition runs until August 16.

The MI-Lab AIR 2025 Result Exhibition taking place at the Udatsu Paper & Craft Museum in Echizen, Japan ends on Thursday. Displaying mokuhanga prints made during the five beginner & advanced residencies hosted by MI-Lab last year, I’m honoured that my prints have there been accessible to a new audience.

And what a lovely surprise that a Japanese visitor to the exhibition asked to purchase my chōchin prints - lanterns I had seen while in Kyoto prior to my residency at MI-Lab last spring. I’ve just received a lovely e-mail to say the pair I mailed to Japan have arrived safely along with these additional kind words:

“Not only is the combination of Kumohadamashi (washi) and printmaking remarkable, but I was deeply impressed by how you expressed the Japanese lantern - an object rooted in Japanese culture - through printmaking from an overseas artist’s perspective. The works have a quality that Japanese artists might not produce in the same way, and to me they feel like an exquisite fusion of Eastern and Western sensibilities.”

You don’t receive feedback like that every day🥰

What a nice surprise to recently learn that the mokuhanga prints I made while at the MI-Lab residency @cfshe_gallery in Echizen, Japan this past spring are being presented alongside the prints made by ALL of this year’s MI-Lab participants! The exhibition showcases a mix of work from the Basic (beginner) & Advanced programs and is on now until January 15, 2026 in the beautiful and historic Udatsu Paper & Craft Museum in the Echizen Washi Village @echizen.washi , where we also experienced making paper by hand in the Japanese way as part of our program.

Congratulations to all participants on the beautiful mokuhanga prints made, and the new knowledge & skills gained! The MI-Lab residency is an experience none of us will soon forget☺️

Many thanks to our instructors @asukatsutsumi_ @ct_1015 @hiroko_tamura_ @tobykobayashi for guiding our explorations of mokuhanga, to @keikoba36 & @otowaprerss for making all the arrangements and Eri for helping with communication, to the Echizen papermakers who were so generous with their time in educating & sharing with us their craft, and to the Echizen community for receiving us so warmly and showing interest in our work. And a special thanks to Asuka-san & Keiko-san for sharing with us these photos of the exhibition - I feel proud to be part of the MI-Lab lineage and to make you proud by continuing to learn and practise Japanese water-based woodblock printmaking and teaching others about its historic importance and contemporary relevance. 🙏

It was great to see my linocut print “Drifting” @gallery.1065 last night. If you too missed the opening on Thursday night - it was a packed house! - the 2-4-1: A Diptych Show is on until next Sunday, November 30. Swipe to see a few of my favourite works from the show (how did I forget to take a photo of my own work on the gallery wall? 🤷‍♀️) but you know that photos of art never compare to seeing it in person…

Gallery 1065 is also hosting a Mug-Raiser next Saturday, November 29 in support of @secondharvest to raise funds to help those facing food insecurity. Your $60 ticket gives you access to a cozy evening of bottom-less wine, art (see the Diptych show while you’re there!), the good vibes of helping those less fortunate in our communities this holiday season, and you get to take a professionally hand-crafted mug home with you too! More info & ticket purchase @gallery.1065

“The Way Forward”
Written by Michael Stanco
Inspired by the artwork "The Way Forward" by Jacquie Sullivan

The Way Forward, bravely steering with your oar.
Always striving for something more.
Gazing upon the twilight sky, sailing bravely into the night.
The path might not yet be clear, darkness ever near… but bravely, you steer.
Creating your path forward, you catch the dying light, flowing into the direction of a new day's sight.
The waters are calm, easing the mind.
Burdensome thoughts start to unwind.
Washing away, looking down at the reflection of yourself, revealing your inner self.
The calm waters sing to you of your true being; a free spirit, flowing along, singing your own song.
The last vestiges of a sorrowful past are gone.
Following the current downstream, rowing closer to your dream
That once seemed impossible to reach…
The silver lining is the lessons you’ll teach.
The past is now in the rearview mirror, the way forward seems ever clearer.
Gazing upon the dawn of the new day.
It’s your own path, a new painting to portray.
It’s time to write it your own way.
It is your life.
Though there is sorrow in your strife,
It is your lesson to preach.
Your feet will soon land on the beach.
Trusting your inner voice, the way is already clear.
It’s already here, the clouds have disappeared.
The sunlight shining on the water, glistening like a chandelier.
The light, though some other may find blinding, illuminates your way.
Sunrays breaking through clouds into your own day.
The way has been with you all along.
Following your internal compass, no matter what they say, truth can’t steer you wrong.
The moment that you realised this is the moment you knew, you became strong.
That was the moment you realised it’s your path, your way.
A beacon to follow so others won’t go astray.
That was the moment you realised that all the worries have gone away.
You have always known the way.
You now know what to do today.
Land starts to appear in the horizon
The familiar sense of relief of the waves etching the sands like before.
As your feet land on the shore, at last you have the thought, “Maybe I am something more.”

Our Gala this year had so many memorable moments. Like this moment where Michael, one of the many artists at SEC, had the chance to meet the artist who inspired his poetry.

Earlier this year Michael entered a literacy contest where he was tasked to write a poem based on a work of art. The work that stood out to him was a print by linocut print artist Jacquie Sullivan entitled, “The Way Forward.”
Jacquie was inspired by canoeing season but also by the many people struggling with how best to move forward through the difficulties of the previous years. She challenged herself to create a coloured print and the result is truly beautiful.

We invited her to come and hear the poem inspired by her work and she was presented with a copy of Michael’s poem. It was truly a memorable moment.

If you’d like to check out Jacquie’s works you can find her on etsy or instagram @jacquieprints
Keep an eye out for our next post where we will post Michael’s poem!

This is the third variation of the Magnolia print that Jacquie has printed, but it has been the initial vision, which is why Jacquie is so pleased to see it come to life!

Now it is always nice to know a little bit of the background behind a piece and what makes it so special. This piece in particular has a beautiful story behind it, what it means to the artist, and what it symbolizes.

The full details are on our website under this print, if you are curious :)
