What a way to end an amazing year of the Visiting Writers Series! Bestselling author Kali Fajardo-Anstine wrapped up our series by sharing her written work with our community during her public reading at Shelton Auditorium on April 16. We are grateful for her time and the genuine interest she had in our students & program. We're so fortunate to have been able to bring Kali Fajardo-Anstine to Butler!

Our author visits just keep getting better and better! This week it was a pleasure to host novelist, filmmaker, and Zen Buddhist priest Ruth Ozeki. During her reading, Ozeki opted to read a selection from her debut short story collection The Typing Lady: And Other Fictions. This was the first time she had publicly read from her collection which is due for publication in June. We thank Ruth Ozeki for bringing her Buddhist ideals and calming presence to Butler University. Just before Butler went on spring break, we concluded a wonderful visit from award-winning screenwriter and novelist Michael Farris Smith. Smith was gracious enough to take on some added duties during his visit by meeting individually with a handful of MFA students to discuss samples of their written work and offer constructive feedback. Despite some stormy weather the evening of his public reading, we were happy to see so many eager attendees join us for an inspiring lecture from Smith who shared how he became a successful writer later in life. Earlier that day he met with English students at the Efroymson Center for Creative Writing to answer questions and offer more life advice. Thank you Michael Farris Smith and all of you who participated in our many events during his visit to Butler University!

What a way to kick start our spring semester of the Visiting Writers Series! Clint Smith gave a powerful and insightful talk about his award-winning book "How the Word Is Passed: A Reckoning With the History of Slavery Across America" and his upcoming book, while also reading some of his poetry. Earlier in the day he met with Butler students in a more intimate setting and answered questions on a variety of topics. Thank you, Clint, for the generous time you spent with us during this frigid February day in Indianapolis! And a special thanks to our official event photographer, Butler student Jada Gangazha! @jadascamera Photo by Jada Gangazha

As the semester comes to an end, we wanted to look back on some of the memories we made during the 2024 fall season. Which was your favorite?🩷😁
