Calypso Chronicles: 🛵 The Boat Galley's Nica Waters & Jeremy rented scooters to putter around the Rangiroa atoll in French Polynesia. Nica says, "I’m a little horrified that we did, frankly. Could have “tourist” in big letters on our backs."

But look at those smiles!🤩 I bet they'll cherish memories of this mini adventure for a long time.

Calypso Chronicles - Fish on!

The Boat Galley's @nicawaters and @jaffadog2 are eating like kings in the South Pacific.

Approaching the Toau atoll in French Polynesia, Jeremy caught 2 tuna, including this gigantic yellowfin. They gave the bonito as a gift to the man who lives in the atoll and then spent 2 hours processing the yellowfin. Now they have 6 pounds of beautiful tuna in the fridge and all their boat neighbors were handed bags of ready to cook fish.

Not having a freezer means you get to play Santa Claus sometimes.

#dovka shared an anchorage with the lovely 28-ft Bristol Channel Cutter, Calypso in Nuka Hiva. It was there that I recorded the latest and long awaited @outthegatesailing episode with @nicawaters and @jaffadog2 (you might recognize Nica’s voice from @theboatgalley podcast). We had such a fun conversation that I’m thrilled to finally share it.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there who teach us to sail, who make sure we wear our life jackets, who show us how to tie bowlines, who take us fishing and snorkeling, who help us with boat work, who feed our appetite for adventure out on the water!

And a very Happy Father’s Day to 2 of The Boat Galley team members: John Herlig who is celebrating by rounding Cape Hatteras on a sailboat delivery (more details to come) and Larry Webber who is celebrating as he sails north on the ICW.

Calypso Chronicles - Another (smaller) Pacific Passage: The Boat Galley's Nica Waters and Jeremy are sailing 500 nautical miles from the Marquesas to the Tuamotu archipelago in French Polynesia.

"It’s funny how perspective changes. It wasn’t all that long ago that a 500 mile passage would have consumed our thoughts and discussion for days. I’d have prepped meals frantically, laid out snacks and made sure the tea was easily accessible. There might have been a thermos of hot water all ready for middle of the night pick me ups.

Now, after the passage from Panama, this one is just another sail between anchorages. We check weather, note the ideal arrival time, decide on a departure time. About the only real difference with this passage, other than the length of it, is that we’re fairly well-stocked in terms of food and fuel. The Tuamotus are more remote than the Marquesas, with supply options more limited. We’re prepared."

Have you ever seen a grapefruit this big?!

This grapefruit (or pamplemousse as they're called in French Polynesia) is a pretty typical size for the bounty available in the Marquesas.

Get a taste of paradise with this very simple grapefruit juice recipe:
Juice 2 ripe grapefruits (or 1 giant Marquesan pamplemousse) and mix with enough water to make 1 liter.

Refrigerate until cold and enjoy!

After a 4,222 nautical mile passage from Panama, s/v Calypso is safely anchored in Hiva Oa, Marquesas, French Polynesia.

Life on a boat, the #smallfridge edition.

First, I emptied the fridge and removed all the charter juice. Then @jaffadog2 removed the beast from its cavity and got to work.

@jaffadog2 taking advantage of the forced layover to add a couple of things mentioned in the recent survey, plus some additional small projects while he had the panel off. He swapped an outlet, changed bulbs in the instrument panel, wired in a high water bilge alarm, and more.

#diyboatprojects are a way of life aboard Calypso. Making life just a tiny bit better, one thing at a time!

Weather forecasts give us cautious optimism that our Florida time will be ending maybe next week.
