Back around 2015, Robert & Rhea Hawkins gave me the opportunity to document at their store, Bob Mitchell’s Fly Shop, and create some short-form fishing content with Bobby.

At the time, I was transitioning out of 23 years in the skateboard & snowboard retail world with my best friends (The Youth Shelter Supply, Bald E-Gal Productions & The Sticks). The community around BMFS reminded me of that same energy — even the old dudes at the shop they called “The Lost Boys” reminded me of the core lords who used to lurk at the skate shop and never buy a damn thing.

So stoked to still be documenting this corner of the fishing subculture. I’m not a good fly angler — I barely even fly fish — but some of my best pals made the switch into this pastime, and I love capturing it with the same gritty, unfiltered approach I brought to skateboard & snowboard filmmaking.

Some may say the perfect summer night doesn’t exist—but we beg to differ. 🍻🌲

For years, Paddlin’ for the Boundary Waters at @bentpaddlebeer in Duluth has been a summer highlight, bringing together live music, great food and beer, raffles, guest speakers, yard games, and the outdoor community—all in support of protecting the Boundary Waters.

Whether you’ve joined us before or this is your first Paddlin’, everyone is welcome at this year’s event, presented by @onxfish and @onxhunt.

And we’ve got a few new additions that make this year’s event even better:

🎨 @jakekeeler will release a new print at the event, with 100% of proceeds benefiting SFBW.

🎶 @nateweilermusic & Friends will kick things off with live music before Dave Simonett & Friends take the stage.

🔥 We’ll also host a wildfire relief silent auction, with proceeds going toward communities impacted by recent wildfires.

It’s shaping up to be our biggest Paddlin’ yet, and we can’t wait to spend another summer night with the Boundary Waters community.

We didn’t set out to build anything loud.

It started quiet—just water moving, a camera rolling, and Jake chasing something honest through art, fly fishing, and feeling. I was capturing it in frames and fragments. Childhood pals creating a random visual art project.

Somewhere along the way, @watersabbath became an annual community current instead of a project. It pulled in the drifters and makers. Anglers and late-night musicians. Skate rats, snowboarders, filmmakers, photographers and Midwest misfits. Folks who’d rather feel it than explain it.

This summer, two of those short stories—Backyard Bronze and Scorcher, found their way into @flyfusionmag’s annual film awards.

Water Sabbath — our first short film.

Built around Jake Keeler’s rhythm of making art and fly fishing, we shaped the story into four chapters: Spark - Search - Grid - Joy.

That year brought everything—COVID, isolation, record-low water, and a shift in how we saw the world. We traveled the Midwest chasing steelhead, trout, and smallmouth, letting those conditions shape both the film and the artwork.

What started as a passion project found its way further than we expected—releasing each chapter with @theflyfishjournal, showing at the Stimmies, and landing in a few film festivals along the way.

A lot of work, a lot of miles, and a lot of learning—but more than anything, a chance to build something meaningful with friends, rooted in four adventures and Jake’s art.
