In the wake of Category 5 Hurricane Melissa, which struck Jamaica and impacted other Caribbean nations, the Caribbean community has come together with incredible urgency and solidarity. The Caribbean Cultural Advisor for the City of Boston has been working directly with the Jamaican Consulate in New York, local nonprofits, and Caribbean-owned businesses to coordinate targeted relief efforts. A container of all donations collected through this drive will be shipped directly to the areas of Jamaica most affected, pro bono courtesy of the consulate. The devastation in Jamaica has been severe: in some towns up to 90 % of homes were destroyed, over 25,000 people displaced into shelters, and roughly three-quarters of the island lost power. Local officials report at least 32 confirmed deaths. Our Caribbean siblings were also affected: Haiti: At least 43 deaths; over 1 million people need humanitarian aid due to flooded homes and damaged crops. Dominican Republic: 2 deaths; more than 500,000 residents without access to safe water and nearly 200 homes damaged. Cuba: Over 3.5 million people lost electricity; 140,000 people cut off from communications in eastern provinces. While the Haitian and Latino Cultural Advisors continue to support their respective communities, anyone with questions or seeking additional information about relief efforts is encouraged to reach out via mocaequity@boston.gov. The City of Boston encourages residents to support the official Hurricane Melissa Relief Drives for Jamaica listed on the flyer. These verified drives are collecting critical supplies that will be distributed directly to impacted communities in partnership with trusted organizations. The information above also highlights: 📍 Donation drop-off sites across Boston and surrounding areas 🎶 Hurricane Relief Concerts supporting recovery efforts 💬 Free legal and therapy services available to those affected To join hurricane relief efforts for any of the islands affected, please reach out to mocaequity@boston.gov
