After the Fiat takeover in 1969, Lancia slowly but surely lost its identity. By the early ‘90s, Lancia’s were nothing more than cleverly disguised Fiats. Fiat realized this too, and gave Lancia permission to return to form. The idea was to win back the typical Lancia customer, the "enlightened bourgeois” that had been Lancia’s clientele in the 1950s and 1960s - not coincidentally Lancia’s glory days. Also not coincidentally, the economy boomed throughout the ‘90s, and with it demand for executive cars, so money could be made with a “premium” brand. The first sign of new Lancia emerged at the 1998 Turin Motor show, in the shape of the Dialogos concept car. According to its designer, Mike Robonson, it was “an historical car that brings Lancia a step out of the dark.” I’d say that too about a car I had designed. Anyway, the Dialogos looked the part, mixing modern technology with more than a hint of the past. It perfectly fitted in the retro trend that had become the latest thing by the end of the millennium. You could question Lancia jumping on the retro bandwagon, but at least the Dialogos looked like a Lancia should. In 2000 Lancia presented a more realistic preview of the upcoming Thesis. That car, the 2000 Giubileo, was a stretched and pimped Thesis. Lancia presented it to Pope John Paul II on the occasion of the year of Jubilee, the celebration of the year 2000 in the Catholic church. Lancia finally launched the Thesis in March 2001, but sales didn’t start until a year later. Lancia Thesis 3.0-24V V6 Emblema, 9 January 2003.
