Huge thanks to @glennnnnnnnnd for our brilliant #ringflash shoot. Glen threw great shapes that made full use of his amazing fitness and beautiful ink! And his magnificent #Jackass goofing in front of the camera had me laughing so hard that I nearly dropped all of my equipment several times!

WATCH THIS SPACE!

This week I’ll be launching a brand-new and deeply personal portrait photography project. Before I do, I wanted to share a little of the story behind it.

My dad took me to my first circus when I was five years old, sometime in the mid-1960s. I was completely mesmerised by the aerial acts and begged him to make me a small trapeze to hang from a tree in our back garden. After that, we went to the circus every year, and after every show I’d rush home to try the latest tricks I’d seen.

I had a difficult childhood and was never particularly sporty, but the trapeze became my sanctuary — a place where I could finally feel good at something physical. Even at that young age, I also sensed something wonderfully queer and gender non-conforming about circus life that I deeply connected with, long before I had the language to describe it.

I eventually outgrew my homemade trapeze as a teenager, but my love of circus never left me. Over the years I went to as many circus performances and events as I could. Then, when I was almost 40 and had moved to Shoreditch, I discovered @nationalcircus right on my doorstep.

When I finally found the courage to sign up for trapeze classes, it felt like coming home. My body remembered moves I’d taught myself 30 years earlier as though no time had passed at all. Trapeze was still in my bones.

That period also coincided with another very difficult chapter in my life, but being up in the air — encouraged by inspiring teachers and surrounded by fearless classmates — kept me focused and helped carry me through.

Now, in my sixties, after 25 years of aerial training, I knew it was finally time to hang up my very amateur but deeply passionate trapeze boots. But the adrenaline, joy, excitement and incredible sense of achievement still come rushing back every time I watch circus artists perform.

And this is exactly what the new photo series is inspired by!

Here’s a video showcasing some of my favorite shots, many of which you’ve seen and liked in a video of me moving from shooting set to another. There are 3 parts, i ll be posting them in reverse so you can see them in the right order once you scroll up. You saw the first part, here’s the second! This one is strong!

Photography has been a huge passion of mine since I was 20, and shooting with talented photographers only fueled my fire. I used pictures of these shoots that you already saw on my profile to create this video of me walking between shooting sets. I prepared 3 parts and I’ll be posting them in reverse so you can watch them in order once you scroll from top to bottom. Here’s the first part!

TEN YEARS ON…

With this current trend of posting photos from ten years ago in 2016, I had a look for a picture in my albums… only to discover I seem to have had multiple identities that year…

Bearded/clean shaven, daddy/twink, polished cultural leader/ scruffy hipster and so on…
One thing is clear: since then I’ve started going grey and now have a lot more wrinkles. I guess it happens to us all!

In order:
1) portrait by @james.m.barrett from his HarshBeautiful series
2) photo by @clarewoodsstudio
3) etching by @peterjamesfield
4) photo by @des_hughes
5-6) selfies
7-8) photos by @aluncallenderphoto
9) at the Colombe d’Or St Paul de Vence
10) at Marilyn Monroe’s grave in the Westwood Village Memorial Cemetary in Los Angeles coinciding in a million-to-one chance with a pilgrimage by @suziekennedy - her lookalike
