It takes quite a lot to get us into a cinema on a Friday night these days. But apparently, a film about a dysfunctional Singaporean stunt studio is one of those things.

With its wonderfully eccentric ensemble, mockumentary wit and a scene-stealing Oon Shu An (@oonshuan), ‘The Sandbox’ (@sandboxmovie.sg) is a refreshing reminder of just how much comedic talent we have in our own backyard.

But beyond the laughs, first-time director James Thoo (@jamesthooyc)’s film makes a compelling case for a different kind of Singaporean comedy—one that trades formulaic punchlines for deadpan humour, workplace absurdities and characters who take themselves far more seriously than they probably should.

Is it perfect? Not quite. Is it worth watching? Absolutely.

Swipe for our take on The Sandbox (now showing in Shaw Theatres islandwide), and head to the link in our bio to read the full review!

The inspiration(s) I picked for Gala night were Rose Chan and Audrey Hepburn. It may seem strange to bring the two together, but amongst many other things I admire about them individually, I loved the contrast of how one was unafraid of her sexuality especially in such a conservative environment, and used it to such great success. She even became the Queen of Charity. The other? Refusing to be sexualised by the studio system of her time, rejecting the beauty standards and creating her own.

As a woman, I think one of the biggest things I’ve had to learn is that: We belong to ourselves. They’re both such icons and carved their own paths. They, and spirit of @sandboxmovie.sg, remind me that sometimes the path doesn’t appear until you start walking it.

To boldness, to pathfinding, to dreams.

This look is every-thing omg, I’m so in love. @calvingan26 @instahairloom loving my refreshed hair, has it been 15 years?? @mlvn.y for helping me bring this vision to life. 😍@fredericklee_couture your creations never fail to astound!! @bpdesilvajewellers how effortlessly you marry heritage and modernity with all your pieces. And @gingerlynette yassssss, this! Hahah

Go watch The Sandbox by @jamesthooyc in the cinemas !! 🖤 promise you will be in for a good time!!

This is DARK WAVE. You belong.

And speaking of belonging, 《THE SANDBOX》is for all the dreamers out there, for everyone who has chased their goals no matter how difficult it was, for all the hopes and dreams of a brighter day, for all the ambitions of those who have been told that their aspirations are too big. And for you, Singapore.

When I first thought of what to wear for The Sandbox Gala Premiere, I just knew it had to be local.

But don't support local just for the sake of it. Support local because it's good. Support local because Singaporeans are wicked talented and do cool shit.

And I'm sure you'd agree if you checked out some authentic Singaporean movies so please do watch @sandboxmovie.sg, @pace_movie and @weareallstrangersfilm, and let us know what you think!! Check out @sightlinesco too! And I'll see you at the movies. 👋🏻
