IT’S LABOR DAY INNIT!!! It’s coming up on the 10 year anniversary of English Craig passing on, I owe this man so much❤️He brought me into tattooing at a time when it was still a secretive world (those days are over!) through that I have been able to travel the world, have an amazing life and now work for myself for the last almost 12 years. These days it seems a lot of younger tattooers don’t want to put the time in to learn this craft, they want the instant gratification of Instagram likes and some vague type of “coolness” that I’m not cool enough to understand! In the beginning of my apprenticeship I worked at the tattoo shop 6 days a week and waitressed 7 days a week, then after I started tattooing (31 years ago!!) 6 days a week for the next 3 years. There were only a few other shops in New Orleans at that time and we were consistently really busy. Walt and I would go out almost every night after work (the shop closed at midnight), but regardless of how late (or early..:) the night went I showed up. I really appreciate having earned my knowledge in this way and I’m still dedicated to tattooing and hope to be able to keep at it as long as possible, its an obsession that grows different arms over time. Thank you forever Craig, love and miss you❤️

Rest in Peace Walt ….. one of the funniest most charismatic artists on this planet. A true one of a kind. Walt was living art with the dial turned up to 11 . He helped me out so much when I first moved to New Orleans. I know I tried to adopt his sense of humor and maybe got it half right. There’s not many left like Walt…. The true genuine article. Friends, I’m going home! Finally discharging today after a 16 day hospitalization, which has been really really hard. Lots of pain. I had a subarachnoid hemorrhage! And I’ve done very well since it and feel very fortunate with how quickly everything was taken care of and it seems like there’s no residual damage? So I’m no weirder than I already was hee hee.

Two big take away from this experience:

1. All my peoples, please know that if you ever get a really excruciatingly painful headache, it feels like a thunder clap when it comes on, it’ll be the worst headache of your life, please don’t go lie down! Go to the emergency department as you’re likely having an SAH. It’s always better safe than sorry but lying down means you probably aren’t gonna get back up again. So I just wanna make sure all of y’all know that: Worst headache of your life? Thunderclap headache that comes on all of a sudden? That’s a dealbreaker ladies. (and gentlemen.)

2. And here’s the biggest thing that I’ve learned in the last 16 days. It’s freaking amazing to be alive! Having a near death experience has truly been life altering and transformative and has showed me how important it is to actually stay present and to enjoy every moment. I almost had only 52 years! Which is way too short cause I have so much more to do. So I’ve been given the gift of more time on this planet and I’m gonna work on enjoying every moment and every day and staying present.

I know I usually post fun things that I do on social media and that this may give the false impression that I’m present in those moments - but in all honesty I’m almost always thinking about something that’s coming up in the future. So I’m gonna work on being present and I’m also gonna work on spending more quality time with my friends and family! That’s entirely the only thing that matters in this lifetime: our family, friends, and small community that surrounds our us.
