In 1865, after formerly enslaved people were told they were free, they moved from Galveston, Texas, to swampy land in Houston and established what would be known as Freedmen’s Town. And it’s still here.

Spending time in this neighborhood and learning its stories has been unforgettable. Listening to those who have lived, fought for, and protected this community reminded me of the enduring presence of ancestors and the dreams that have been held close for generations.

Where We Find Ourselves honors that resilience through photographs, film, and installation, capturing both the past and the ways this community continues to shape its future.

I’m endlessly grateful to the team who made this exhibition possible: Maggie Deer, whose hands brought the miniatures to life; Jaminah Alcorn, whose edit shaped the films; Chester Anand, whose score and sound filled the space; Mich Stevenson, for curatorial brilliance; Charonda Johnson, for guidance and insight; and Juice House, for production and support. Thanks also to the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, the Freedmen’s Town Conservancy, and everyone who contributed behind the scenes.

The show will be up until December, and we’ve got some exciting programming planned with Mo of @blkwomanmusiq and Amarie of @thereadingroom.htx Stay tuned for details! Come see the exhibition, explore Freedmen’s Town, and witness this living history.
