This weekend, few of my athletes from national training center took part in the advent run in Mödling in the 5000 m race.
After the first few weeks of low-intensity training, the results were better than we expected. We now have a few months ahead of us in which we will gradually build up form toward the triathlon season.

Results:
@jan.alb (2004) – 15:07
@raphaelschweigertri (2007) – 15:51
Niklas Reichart (2010) – 17:11
@carolina.schiefer (2006) – 19:48
Greta Böhrer (2011) – 20:34

Interestingly, three athletes ran personal bests even though the running sessions in the first training block were kept only at the level of 1.3 mmol or lower. Let’s see how much we can lower these times by the start of the triathlon season.

Open-water triathlon swimming differs significantly from pool swimming. Triathletes have different anthropometric characteristics compared to pool swimmers, they swim in a pack rather than in individual lanes, and they take advantage of drafting. The first buoy is often placed within the first 300 meters of the race, making early positioning crucial. Lifting the head for sighting disrupts body and hip alignment, while ocean currents and waves also influence the optimal stroke rate.

Today I demonstrated Caroline Routier’s technique to my athletes, and at race-pace swimming speed we incorporated key elements of triathlon-specific swim mechanics. Routier dominated the swim segment of races for years. She maintained a stroke rate of 97 strokes per minute, used a powerful kick, and her excellent body rotation allowed her to generate exceptional quality through the first two-thirds of the underwater phase of the stroke. A similar technique was later adopted by Summer Rappaport.
