To Framily. Huge heartfelt gratitude to @janakab who left North Carolina in the pre-dawn hours with D to meet me and the boys for a matinee of @crazysexycoolmusical. This woman has driven to multiple states to see shows that I’ve done. I don’t think she’s missed a show since I’ve known her. What more fitting than this beautiful @arenastage show about sisterhood. Grateful she got to meet some of the cast and the kids got to spend time together (we missed you J).

📖 Deep gratitude to @ohiocelebratesmorrison for the opportunity to co-write and curate the TEACHING WITH PRIMARY SOURCES curriculum guide for Toni Morrison’s THE BLUEST EYE. • • • 📖 Full circle moment working on this guide with Dr. Janaka Bowman Lewis—we were eager participants in the inaugural Toni Morrison Society’s Language Matters Initiative. We spent two, fully immersive weeks learning and advocating for teaching Morrison’s body of work in K-12 classrooms. I’m eternally grateful for those years. Meeting Ms. Morrison, shaping my scholarship around utilizing her picture 📚 in secondary education and nontraditional educational settings, and meeting so many other brilliant educators who came together in Cincinnati, Charleston, Kansas City, Princeton, and Paris was truly transformative—and certainly a catalyst for writing my own picture 📚🥹. • • • 📖 This abbreviated resource, which encourages using primary sources to guide discussion of The Bluest Eye, is available on the official Ohio Celebrates Toni Morrison website. Did you know that Margaret Bonds wrote a musical? 🤯🎭 In the late 1960s, Bonds became captivated by the incredible true story of Elizabeth Keckley—a woman who bought her own freedom from slavery, became a master seamstress, and eventually served as the personal dressmaker and confidante to Mary Todd Lincoln in the White House. 🧵✨ Both Keckley and Bonds were visionary Black women artists who had to fight fiercely for access, platforms, and the right to tell their stories. Bonds began brewing the idea for the musical, Bitter Laurel, in NYC from 1965–1967 amidst the electric energy of the Golden Age of musical theatre, and wrote it after moving to Los Angeles in 1967–1969. Sadly, she never saw it fully realized. She left behind only lead sheets and a few score reductions. But we couldn’t let her final massive project stay unsung. Alongside Dr. Justin Smith, I co-commissioned the completion of the work. Thanks to the monumental restoration efforts of Dr. Michael Cooper and Christopher Washington, we officially premiered a semi-staged reading of this work-in-progress on April 18-19 at Queens University of Charlotte! 🎶 The exciting part: The upcoming Bonds Unsung album will feature the Keckley songs and three stunning choral numbers from this recovered musical! ⏳ WE HAVE 9 DAYS LEFT to bring this album across the finish line.
