POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Last Friday, Sojourner House hosted “Reimagining Victim Advocacy: A Conference on Housing, Justice & Innovation,” bringing together 300 advocates, policymakers, clinicians, and justice professionals to discuss the future of survivor-centered care and tackle the most pressing challenges facing victims of abuse today.

It was a wonderful day filled with hope, resource sharing, and mission-driven conversations. We’re so very grateful for everyone who attended.💜

The event featured nine dynamic breakout sessions led by industry pioneers. Participants engaged in critical, forward-looking discussions ranging from the intersection of coercive control and legal systems to the rise of tech-enabled abuse. A primary focus of the conference was the current affordable housing crisis and its severe, compounding impact on immediate and long-term survivor safety.

The highlight of the conference was a powerful keynote address by bestselling author Rachel Louise Snyder. Drawing from the extensive research she did when writing “No Visible Bruises: What We Don’t Know About Domestic Violence Can Kill Us,” Snyder provided an intimate, heartbreaking look at domestic violence homicide. She sharply illustrated the critical moments where existing systems fail those in vulnerable positions, challenging the audience to shift from reactive measures to aggressive prevention and intervention strategies.

Not only did the conference create a beautiful space for cross-sector collaboration, but it raised funds to support Sojourner House’s ongoing efforts to provide victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking with safe housing, clinical counseling, legal representation, and a pathway to healing and stability.

Last week I spoke at the Cornell Jane Doe Solidarity Rally on Boston Common organized by @massnow @victimrightslaw @barccofficial @jane.doe.inc @protecttransfutures and others. I condemned what the Cornell 7 and their 57 enablers in the group chat did to Jane Doe at the Chi Phi frat house — and I also condemned the failures of Cornell University and the criminal legal system in responding to her attackers. Jane Doe made a very clear statement during the Title IX process that she was 100% confident she was raped, and yet that process and those institutions failed her. I talked about some of what we’ve done on Beacon Hill to support survivors — and I joined with rally organizers in calling on the legislature to do more — by increasing state funding for sexual and domestic violence services, investing in prevention and response mechanisms, and removing systemic barriers preventing survivors from accessing support. In particular, the state government should fund and require mandatory consent education, from early elementary through high school and also pass the Healthy Youth Act.

We recently partnered with Jane Doe Inc. to analyze data from intimate partner homicides in Massachusetts.

Part of our field’s collective commitment to end domestic violence must include understanding where our systems fall short - and acting together to close those gaps.

What we learn from lives lost needs to change how we respond to those still at risk.

I'm honored to represent @dissarmoniemag and @mass.artistsforchange to facilitate a collaborative community art project and speak at a rally organized by @massnow and @jane.doe.inc in showing solidarity with Jane Doe in her fight with Cornell, Chi Phi Fraternity, and the criminal justice system.

We crafted and personalized paper flames--lifting them together in unison during my speech to represent unity and change--an end to rape culture. As the 800+ strong crowd stood strong and brave, raising their hand-made flames and flashlights around the historic Bandstand, we yelled together, "We will not be silenced! We will not back down!"

I am Jane Doe.

Here in solidarity with @massnow @jane.doe.inc @barccofficial @victimrightslaw @impact_boston @protecttransfutures and survivors everywhere.

Rape and sexual assault are never acceptable. Sexual violence is not inevitable, and none of us should accept a society where women must live in fear and organize their lives around the threat of being attacked.

I want to condemn in the strongest possible terms what the Cornell 7 and their 57 enablers in the group chat did to Jane Doe at the Chi Phi frat house — and I also condemn the failures of Cornell University and the criminal legal system in responding to her attackers. Jane Doe made a very clear statement during the Title IX process that she was 100% confident she was raped, and yet that process and those institutions failed her.

And while the outrage of this event is what calls us here this evening — we know this problem is systemic — 26% of women report being sexually assaulted during their college years — this is a staggering figure and an urgent reminder that rape culture must end.

It’s not lost on me that I am a man speaking to you, in the context of a patriarchal society that privileges men, at a rally organized by the incredible women leaders of Mass Now, Jane Doe, BARCC, Victim Rights Law Center, and others — and yet, I accepted the invitation to be here this evening because we know it is important for men to speak out as well, to hold other men accountable, and to do everything in our power to push for meaningful change and demand an end to sexual violence.

As State Representative, I am committed to doing my part. We must increase state funding for sexual and domestic violence services; invest in prevention and response mechanisms, and remove systemic barriers preventing survivors from accessing support.

In particular, the state government should fund and require mandatory consent education, from early elementary through high school. We also need to pass the Healthy Youth Act to ensure evidence-based sex and relationship education is required statewide.

One legislator cannot do this alone — but seeing everyone here on the Common this evening gives me hope that real change is possible.
