Is yoga enough? 🤔

As i take on more private clients, i get this question a lot and with every certification i add on my resume i realize yoga does A LOT of things really well physically + mentally; however, it doesn’t check EVERY BOX.

A very short list of what yogas does *REALLY* well:
✅ Improves balance
✅ Increases flexibility & range of motion
✅ Builds proprioception & overall body awareness
✅ Strengthens “pushing” muscle groups

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) is doing its best to study “yoga”; however, there’s many forms of yoga and that creates its own rabbit 🐰 hole…

The ACSM defines physical fitness as the sum of “cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength and endurance, body composition and flexibility, balance, agility, reaction time and power”

So, what does that mean for your yoga practice?

I read an interesting article talking about this subject matter and it listed these four *deficits* for yoga:
1️⃣ cardio / endurance training (yin vs power)
2️⃣ pulling strength (most of yoga is pushing)
3️⃣ progressive overload (you’re limited to your body weight unless you incorporate weights or props like resistance bands)
4️⃣ variability (do you practice the same postures / sequence or do you change up formats / styles?)

If you ask my opinion, i will always say yoga is the compliment to anything else you do; but it shouldn’t be the ONLY thing you do. For me, yoga stretches my life back together when i get off the mountain, finish a hike clocking miles with my dog, or need to stretch after a solid climbing or weightlifting sesh.

My body is noticeably *missing* yoga when i skip it a few days. Does that happen to you? 🤷🏼‍♀️ Finding balance: Yoga helps athletes strengthen their core and improve stability for better performance.
