Intro to Artists' Books for Photographers with Janet Guertin @janetguertin

Click! Photography Festival @clickphotofest
October 4, 2026
Durham Convention Center
Durham NC

Because of the hands-on nature of this class, enrollment is limited to 10 people.

Artists' books are a genre of bookbinding and book arts that can't always be distinctly defined but offer an opportunity to think more broadly about concept and craft through the book form. They are often more art object than book and can involve multiple mediums and techniques including photography.

In this workshop we'll look at a variety of structures that lend themselves to presenting photographs in fresh and non-traditional ways, and talk about how materials and photos combined with form and folds can enhance any
photography project. We'll also make a Panorama Book, incorporating your own photos into an elegant display.

No previous experience required, but participants should be comfortable with cutting, folding, and gluing.

The Creative Coptic Bookbinding Workshop with Janet Guertin

August 29th, 2026

In this class you’ll create a coptic journal with a creative interior that you’ll be excited to use later on. We’ll prepare the cover boards, folded signatures of a variety of pages, foldouts and pockets, and learn the 1-needle coptic stitch–a binding method that allows the book to lay flat and highlights the exposed stitching. Come enjoy the joy of crafting your own creative coptic journal from scratch!

I’m very happy to post that the Glue Binding Project website is now available to view - see link in bio. A very generous gift of copies of the book Glue: Collage, Assemblage & Other Sticky Pursuits in sheets was given by @uppercasemag to a group of binders and the resulting bindings are on the website. This is the eleventh binding project on a book from the Encyclopedia of Inspiration series by Uppercase Magazine.

This is my own binding - I took the glue title literally and made the boards and spine of the binding using PVA with bits of the dust jacket from the book collaged into the covers. The adhesive in most bindings is usually not visible, as it is underneath the materials it is used to adhere. The signatures were sewn through the spine piece in what is commonly known as a non-adhesive binding because no glue is attached to the printed pages - a binding made of glue which is at the same time non-adhesive!

Other artists who bound books for this project include @jaltepet @creakyspinebindery @janetguertin @eisroughdraft @wishbone.bindery @pinciottipat @melindarittenhouse @nuthatchbindery

Janet Guertin is a book artist and graphic designer exhibiting in the Pulp Fiction show at Muse Gallery 🤍

Janet is an advocate for celebrating the tactile and tangible in everyday life. Working with both fine and found materials, she creates artworks that invite curiosity, reflection, and a sense of openness.

Currently on view is ‘Never odd or even: a palindromic tale’ which is a continuously convoluted carousel form that unfolds in the round. As the structure rotates endlessly upon itself, it reveals four distinct displays, each composed of five panels—offering viewers an immersive and ever-evolving visual experience.
