Ahhhh the joys! 😵‍💫Ladies, if you’re over 38 and suddenly finding that everyone is getting on your bloody nerves, your patience has disappeared, your brain has gone on holiday and you can go from laughing to wanting to commit murder in approximately 30 seconds… welcome to the wonderful world of perimenopause! 🤣🤪🔥

And the best bit? Half the time you haven’t got a bloody clue why you’re annoyed in the first place! 😂

Has menopause awareness really gone too far? 🤔

I was interested to hear the discussion on Loose Women @loosewomen today about whether we’re now talking too much about menopause, with references to books, tote bags and the growing menopause industry.

And do you know what? I actually agree with some of the concerns.

Menopause has become big business, and I do worry about women being sold expensive products, supplements and treatments that aren’t always necessary or backed by good evidence.

But have we gone too far in talking about menopause? Absolutely not!

I’ve spent well over a decade supporting women through menopause, having experienced surgical menopause myself at 44.

I’ve spoken to thousands of women who have felt frightened, dismissed, confused and completely alone. Women who didn’t understand what was happening to their bodies. Women who struggled to get the right help from their GP. Women whose relationships, careers and mental health have suffered.

And we’re seriously suggesting we’re talking about it too much?

If a menopause book helps a woman understand her symptoms, wonderful. If a tote bag starts a conversation, what’s the harm?

What concerns me far more is that women are STILL struggling to access knowledgeable healthcare professionals and appropriate treatment.

There’s a huge difference between raising awareness and exploiting women commercially.

We absolutely should question the menopause industry, but please don’t confuse that with the importance of education, conversation and community.

I started my support group MHDG all those years ago because I felt so desperately alone. Today, I also manage Davina McCall’s Menopausing & Me community, and I see every single day why these conversations are still needed.

So no, I don’t believe menopause awareness has gone too far.

I believe we’ve still got a long way to go.

One way to do a fake marble technique. I’ve also done this using emulsion paints, eggshell and a varnish which does give a little more protection if it’s a piece that is used a lot.

It’s simply something that I’ve practiced over time & have done this effect for customers. Chalk paints are great to practice with as you can simply go over it again if you mess up! (And they’re so blendable too). It’s a good idea to get images of different marble on google as a guide for inspiration. This is a simple design, but I’m quite fond of it. Works lovely on bedside tables 😊.

Just have fun with it and get creative!

I’ve got a kitchen cupboard upcycle coming up soon & lots of other exciting things! Oooh and the ever exciting trip to the tip! 🎨

I used paints by Annie Sloan - old white for the base. Graphite & old white with water, equal parts (you don’t need much!) and some French linen too, all sealed with a clear wax.

This clip from EastEnders @bbceastenders highlights something I hear from women all the time, especially younger women struggling with perimenopause.

When Yolande says, “Are you sure? You’re too young,” it really struck a chord with me because I hear this constantly!

Ladies, please don’t doubt yourselves! You know your own bodies. Write down every symptom, however insignificant it may seem, and take that list to your GP. Most importantly, advocate for yourselves! Being in your 30s or 40s doesn’t mean you can’t be experiencing perimenopause.

As we’re still in Menopause Awareness Month, I want to remind you that if you’re struggling to get the right support, there are other options.

And please join our support groups, especially you younger ladies. Understanding what’s happening to your body is so important.

What an absolutely mind blowing day, and one that left me feeling incredibly humbled. 🥺

To have ladies come up to me and say that the support groups have literally saved them, and another lady tell me how much my Instagram page has helped her, honestly, I can’t tell you how much that means to me. 🥹💜

It’s moments like these that remind me exactly why I started supporting women all those years ago.

I want to reiterate that I’m not medically trained, but I do have over 14 years of lived experience, along with menopause training, and I’m always happy to talk about anything and everything when it comes to menopause.

I’ve been there myself. I know how lonely, frightening and overwhelming this journey can be, especially when you don’t know where to turn.

So please, if you’re struggling or simply need someone to listen, reach out. And if I can’t help you, I will certainly do my very best to direct you to someone who can.🙌

No woman should feel she’s navigating menopause alone. That’s why community and supporting one another is so incredibly important to me.

And to every single lady who came over to say hello on Saturday, thank you. You’ve reminded me just how much a little support can mean. 💜🙌

It’s always such a privilege to be part of an evening that celebrates some of the most inspirational and courageous children and families from across Wales.

An evening full of laughter, tears, pride and moments that remind us just how remarkable these young people are.

A night I feel very lucky to have been part of.

A little bit about me… 🤪

This is me. I’m 60, married for almost 40 years and mum to three amazing sons who I’m incredibly proud of. I’m especially proud that we’ve raised three men who respect women and understand that we should all be on a level playing field.

I was born in Kingston upon Thames in the ’60s, the eldest of three girls 🤗 apparently the bossy one! 😂 We moved around a lot, I went to several schools and spent much of my younger life trying to fit in and work out where I belonged.

Life has certainly given me plenty of lived experience! A traumatic first birth, extended episiotomy, haemorrhage, blood transfusions and eventually having my vagina “refashioned” or my designer vagina, as I call it! 😂 I’ve also experienced hysteroscopies, laparoscopies, breast biopsies, colonoscopies, haemorrhoidectomy and oophorectomy!

Then came perimenopause 😵‍💫

After having an ovary removed at 44, with my remaining ovary later found to be non-functioning, my hormones crashed and I went to an incredibly dark place. I was prescribed antidepressants, but eventually my own research led me to realise hormones and menopause were playing a huge part in how I felt.

That experience changed my life.

Twelve years ago I started MHDG because I never wanted another woman to feel as alone as I did. I later spent two wonderful years working as a support mentor with a menopause clinic and now work independently supporting women alongside another menopause clinic.

For over four years I’ve also had the privilege of community managing Menopausing & Me for Davina McCall.

I’ll be 61 this year and, after spending so many years wondering where I fitted in, I think I finally found where I belong.🙌

Supporting women is my passion. I offer a safe, confidential space where women can talk about the things they may not feel able to share anywhere else.💜

I’m not medically trained and certainly don’t have all the answers - I’m simply a woman with a hell of a lot of lived experience who turned some of the hardest years of her life into something that might help another woman. 💜
