|Throwback Thursday|

You could forgive me for thinking I was back in Amsterdam @labotessahotel yesterday meeting up with a friend and wonderful travel journalist @jaredincpt.

At this great little spot in the city centre a stone’s throw from Parliament you can eat Stroof Waffels and see my favourite Vermeer painting of the milkmaid on the walls.

Cape Town is full of hidden gems and this is a lovely spot to meet a friend over a cup of tea or glass of delicious @kenforrestervineyards Chenin!

Hello Cape Town 🙋‍♂️
Touching down after four months abroad, this is salve for my soul. Two days to catch my breath, and then launching into seven travel assignments across the country: Cape Town, Hermanus, De Kelders, Camps Bay, Franschhoek, Kruger National Park, and Johannesburg.

Stay tuned for four week’s of social media reminders, of why South Africa remains one of the most sought after destinations globally 🇿🇦.

It’s also a significant as South Africa celebrates Pride month in October - a reminder that all are welcome and equal - and for me a source of pride as one of the most progressive legal frameworks for LGBTQ+ rights in the world - was the first African country to affirm all - and South Africa was the first country in the world to include specific constitutional protection against discrimination based on sexual orientation.

They call this the ‘diving board’ of Table Mountain, and it completely shifts your perspective. Standing out here on the edge of Kasteelspoort, looking down at the endless blue of the Atlantic and the palms of Camps Bay below. Cape Town just hits different when you’re watching it from the clouds. #Kasteelspoort #TableMountain #CampsBay #DivingBoard #SecretCapeTown ⛰️🌊🇿🇦☀️🏖️

After a hiatus bake of 2026 was back with a bang.
As usual back room shenanigans and corrupt practices were attempted but the judges remained above reproach. I cannot be bought! Offers of fancy trips and fortnum swag in no way will sway me. Not At All.

This year we had fig tarts, mocha chocolate ,red velvet, carrot, caramel, cheesecake, spice cakes. Some a resounding success- who knew a spice cake could be so lush. Others clearly needed more work( coughs cheescake).

Best looking cake went to new comers @jaredincpt and Robert.
We had the youngest runner up in bake off history with Charles snagging second place for his red velvet.
And after multiple years of nearlys our Graham finally took the coveted prize with a cherry amaretto pie.

Planning already in place for next year. If you have what it takes submit your entries now.

After all the hard work of a summer season - it’s these special moments in between with friends that make island life so magical

And when the season ends, those are the things we get to keep - the laughter, the stories, the beautiful memories and all those little moments that stay with us long after summer is over 🤍

Each and every guest that steps foot into Tshwene Lodge has a story to tell. And we love stories around these parts.

That’s why we cherish our Sightings Book, located in the central lounge, where guests can read and record daily wildlife sightings from their game drives. Memories that can live on and be shared forever.

“A novel idea I hadn’t encountered before; I felt like I went on a mini-safari as I read through the stories – even adding our own.”

What’s your story from a stay at our treetop escape?

📍 Tshwene Lodge just three hours from Joburg, perfect for a weekend escape in the @welgevonden_official game reserve.

The Vineyard Hotel: A Garden That Keeps Its Own Time

Another one for the series, the best of Cape Town, told slowly.

There is a version of this city that doesn’t rush. You find it on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, past a gate that opens onto three hectares of garden older than most of what we call history here. A stream runs through it. Tortoises move through it slower than I do, which says something.

The Vineyard Hotel, have you been?
