On Youth Day, we remember the courage of the young people of 1976 who refused to be silent in the face of injustice. Many paid with their lives so future generations could live with rights secured in our Constitution.

Those freedoms include the right to assemble, protest peacefully, and speak freely. Section 16 protects freedom of expression, and Section 17 protects the right to peaceful assembly, demonstration, picket, and petition. These are not privileges, they are the backbone of a functioning democracy. 🇿🇦

In the Krawitz v PSC matter before the High Court, these rights are being tested in practice, raising a simple but serious question: how far can protest, boycott, and political expression be limited before the Constitution itself is weakened?

Fifty years after Soweto, we honour that legacy by defending the right to dissent, to organise, and to stand against injustice wherever it occurs.

We will not be intimidated.
We will not be silenced.
We will not be muzzled.

PSA: Deciding a Jew is ‘not a real Jew’ is:

1) Halachically (according to Jewish law) not your decision to make, unless you are G-D, which you most certainly are not and for which we can be grateful.

2) An ancient antisemitic trope that has been used as a means of defining who should live and die and be ostracised or worse.

3) Very eugenics. Very Hitler. Very Darwin. Is it your plan to get your callipers out and measure our noses or do the ‘drop your pants’ test to see who qualifies like the fascists who came before you?

4) Inconsistent with the maxim that ‘you’re born a Jew, you die a Jew’, that you have all so graciously reminded us of so many times when you tell us ‘Hamas will kill [us] as Jews’. Hamas doesn’t send us rape threats, death threats, drive cars into us, persecute us and our comrades, try and fail destroy us. Zionists do!

Today we stood outside the Provincial Legislature and called out the Democratic Alliance.

They had a chance to show moral courage. They chose silence. They chose to look away. They chose not to stand when it mattered.

Silence on Palestine. Silence on Lebanon. Silence on Iran. That silence is a position.

We will not stay quiet. They have shown us who they are.

Elections are coming.

A majority white led party unwilling to clearly call out apartheid and genocide, should concern all of us. Silence in the face of injustice is not neutral, it’s a warning.
