📸 Introducing SNAPPED Margate

Snapped Margate grew out of Emerging Creatives, a week-long residency designed and hosted by People Dem Collective, bringing together eight young artists aged 18–23 from South London, all alumni of the AMT Youth Programme (AMTYP), created and run by Alice Walsh.

As part of the residency, PDC resident artist Jas Dhillon @jasbir3 brought SNAPPED into the process, creating photographic prompts around our five pillars - Land, Healing, Sea, People + Joy.

The artists explored, felt, witnessed + captured Margate through their own eyes. A curated selection of those images became SNAPPED Margate.

And now, we’re opening up the invitation.

Throughout October, our Tuesday SNAPPED gatherings invite our Black, Brown + Global Majority local community to explore each pillar together through photography + conversation.

🌍 Online, the invitation is open to everyone, wherever you are.

Respond to any of our five pillars through your eyes, experiences + everyday moments.

One image. One pillar. Your perspective.

Introducing LAND 🌱

Over the coming month, we’re opening up the five pillars at the heart of People Dem Collective; LAND, SEA, PEOPLE, HEALING and JOY - sharing what they mean to us, how they’ve shaped our work, and how they’ll guide where we go next.

First up: LAND.

For People Dem Collective, LAND is about sovereignty, equity and belonging.

It holds memory, ancestry, culture, nature, care and possibility.

We’re interested in the ways Black, Brown and Diaspora communities have created and held their own spaces, resources and infrastructure - places for care, nourishment, culture and collective possibility.

We also think about LAND as a living system. Roots, soil, mycelium and everything happening beneath the surface remind us that thriving doesn’t happen alone. It relies on relationships, networks, shared resources and the right conditions to grow.

Now, throughout October, we’re opening the exploration up to you.

Through photography, conversation, collage, drawing and making, we’ll be thinking together about LAND, ownership, place and belonging, and asking what our future spaces could make possible.

At the heart of it all is one question:

What do our communities need to put down roots, have agency and thrive?

We look forward to welcoming you and to exploring together.

🌞 The May that felt like July!

I’m about to go into hospital for a procedure, the start of June will be spent in rest and recovery, so I’m grateful to have spent May growing things, in all forms, mainly in groups, with very lovely people. 🍓 Kind, kind, very kind, loving people.

And daily listening to @olafurarnalds on BBC Sounds - highly recommended. Particularly ‘To bring Calm amidst the Chaos’ and ‘Nordic Wilderness’ lists.

Farage and Yaxley-Lennon could never.
