At the outset of “Father Time,” an early cut from @kendricklamar ‘s most recent album, “Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers,” the #Compton rapper’s partner tells him he really needs some therapy: “Real n— need no therapy,” he responds dismissively. By the end of the song’s first verse, however, it’s clear his partner is right, as Lamar vents about the generational trauma that has afflicted his own life over heart-swelling piano chords.

“We grow up where our parents don’t know about [therapy], our grandparents don’t know about that,” Lamar told Spotify’s Carl Chery last year. “You live and experience the things you go through, and you deal with it right then and there, or you never deal with it. We learn to hold all our s— in.”

“I had to challenge myself to go to therapy,” he continued. “That’s a whole new step. That’s growth.”
Lamar’s long-held views aren’t uncommon in the Black community. The idea of “suck it up” and “tough it out” has persisted, often resurfacing in abusive relationships or addiction battles rather than healthy release. But slowly, that mindset is beginning to change.

Some are finding release through #therapy; others find it easier to shed burdens in communal spaces, such as the yoga and meditation activities held by @walkgoodla WalkGood LA. Founded in June 2020 by Etienne Maurice, the organization provides spaces for bonding, primarily in L.A.’s Black community, through yoga classes, guided meditations and breath work, hikes, run clubs and other activities around L.A. and beyond.

In preparation for The Times’ next installment of Behold for #Juneteenth, which will spotlight the path toward mental health and psychological freedom in Black L.A., we spoke to attendees of a recent WalkGood yoga session on how they’ve sought healing.

Where do I even start?

I want to thank The Ultimate Creator for guiding me to this space and myself for physically taking the action to walk in my purpose. Thank you @hadiiyabarbel for being a light in the world, a mentor through life. You have so much ancient wisdom that you openly share with anyone you encounter and that is Goddess Energy/Magical. You are like the wind to our fire, giving us that extra push to fully come into who we are because WE ARE OUR OWN HEALERS. Another reminder that stuck with me is that we all are “teaching and learning” that’s it. Everything that is brought in our life is to teach and learn and when we start to look at life in that way we know NOTHING is personal. Thank you for sharing yourself and allowing us to have a safe space to heal, cry, dance and laugh. Every moment was blissful and EMPOWERING. ✨

Thank you @dejahgomez for your Empress Sound experience. It truly allowed us to tap in even further. The card that chose me was “intuition” and trusting that. That was confirmation to keep trusting without a doubt. I appreciate the form of healing you share with the world. ✨

Thank you @doseofdiosa for leading the Sacred Cacao Ceremony and singing ceremonial songs that brought us closer to our mothers mothers deeply opening that space to connect with our ancestors. Hearing your voice felt like home. Thank you ✨

Thank you to all of the other Goddesses I’ve encountered. I truly saw myself in each and every one of you. Thank you for showing up for yourselves and for your sisters. Tremendous healing was taking place and we released a lot of pain, guilt, shame and unworthiness. WE ARE WILD WOMEN!!! The work continues…

I AM FILLED WITH BLISS AND GRATITUDE!! 😭💚✨

A year ago today I was baptized, and my life has radically changed. Some of you won’t make it through this entire caption so in short God is the plug.

For those that stuck around: I have always longed for intimacy with God. When I was a little girl my family only went to church on Easter and Christmas, but at 10 years old I would make master plans to get to church with whoever would let me tag along (which was usually @vljvnae ). It was something about being in an atmosphere where God’s presence could be felt that my little spirit craved. In my adult years I have met God face to face for myself and realized the presence of God, and ultimately the peace and joy I was seeking has been within me all along.

After moving to LA and finding @tphonela , thank God I did, I began to grow in my spirituality and realized I had never been baptized. Making the decision to fully turn myself over to God was not something I took lightly. There was a lot of death to self, death to patterns, death to relationships I thought would last a life time, and ultimately death to the life I had built. I wanted to do all this work to ensure when I turned myself over to God I had done my part. This year has taught me that you are never going to feel fully ready. Choosing God, choosing to walk in the identity He has for you, choosing to answer the call over your life is a daily choice. It’s a journey that never fully comes to an end there are highs and lows but that’s the beauty of it. My yes a year ago has lead me to a billion other yeses in my day to day, and some hard no’s. What I have now realized is God never needed me to be all buttoned up and the best me to come to Him, He just needed me to say yes to being used as a living sacrifice daily.

Here is a little photo dump of the bonus family that has helped me in more ways than I can express.
