Happy 16th Birthday, Jason! ❤️ Here you are at age 15 and age 1. A lot has changed between then and now, but your penetrating gaze, your empathy, intelligence, musicality, infectious curiosity, and disarming humor are still the same. We love you!

An amazing week in beautiful Bucharest, Romania for the George Enescu International Music Festival!

It was an honor to be part of this historic festival as a mentor, juror, and composer. The students were delightful, and it was so lovely to get to know fellow jurors Gabriela Ortiz, Mark Simpson, Johanna Doderer, Zygmunt Krause, Doina Rotaru, Dan Dediu, Adrian Iorgulescu, and Elsa Vautrain. And, of course, to work with the incredible Marin Alsop and the Romanian National Radio Orchestra (as I wrote about in my last post.)

Thank you to conductor Cristian Măcelaru for inviting me to be part of this, and to the warm, wonderful team of administrators — Oana, Cristina, and Graziela — for making it all such a deeply rewarding experience.

(And our kids had a blast, too! 🤘)

Pente has always signaled summer beach vacation in my family. My father loved games and bought one of the original versions of this one — it’s still housed in the now-weathered red tube that the game used to be packaged in when it was originally released in 1977. It’s pronounced Pent-ay, but my father always called it Pent-ee because he’s from Maryland, where we spent our summers. We’re still playing on the same pleather mat with the same glass pieces on the beach down the Cape today. I miss my father every time we play, and I remember his browned skin, toothy smile, and the fact that he never let me win, which made my occasional triumphs all the sweeter.

Diana's bat mitzvah 6/13/26!!! 🎉🎉 It was a joyful celebration with family and friends from around the country. Diana broke her foot a week before, but instead of letting it get her down, she pivoted to the idea of a BOOT MITZVAH and her friends jumped aboard, wearing their own bedazzled solidarity bandages (shout out @aviva_fustochenko_ and Diana’s dancer teacher @toetapn for bedazzling D’s boot!)

We dearly missed Alex's parents, who couldn't make the trip but were very much with us in spirit! 🩷

Proud of Diana's humor and resilient can-do nature, and grateful to our beautiful family and community for all the love!!!
