Cantabria es el arte de cruzar los valles saltando con una vara de madera.

I was lucky enough to get to know Seve during my years on the European Tour.

He was a very special character, and this is one of those little moments I’ve never forgotten.

A lovely memory of a great man. ⛳️

Some memories stay with you forever.

Many years ago, I had the privilege of meeting Seve Ballesteros. He signed my shirt, we had a lovely conversation, and although it was only a brief meeting, it’s one I’ll never forget.
For those who are too young to remember Seve, he wasn’t just one of the greatest golfers to ever play the game—he was one of the most imaginative and inspirational players the sport has ever seen.
This year at The Open at Royal Birkdale Golf Club, I had the pleasure of meeting his son, Javier Ballesteros, on the practice range. We had a great conversation, and spending time with him reminded me exactly why I fell in love with golf in the first place. Watching Seve create magic from impossible places—under trees, from the rough, and with shots that nobody else would even attempt—made me want to play this incredible game.
It was a real pleasure meeting Javier and I hope our paths cross again for many years to come. Thank you for bringing back some wonderful memories of your father and everything he gave to the game of golf.

Seve, Norman, Faldo, Langer, Woosie - these were the stars that this week's guest on This Golfing Life spent his professional life writing about, getting to know and, occasionally, getting into scrapes with. Bill Elliott is a doyen British golf writer who has covered 40 Opens in a decades-long career that spans daily newspapers and magazines. This edition of the podcast is a "Big Five" special, looking back at the biggest personalities in a golden period for golf outside America.
