Ref’s Eye: BDFPA Rule Updates, P. II: Bar Grip T-shirts

This one’s easy: bar grip t-shirts are not allowed. It’s not a new rule as such, but rather a clarification of existing rules.

That is, a t-shirt is legal provided that it:

1. Does not consist of any stretch materials

2. Is made either exclusively of cotton or of polyester, or a combination of cotton and polyester.

Note: this is NOT an exhaustive list of what makes a t-shirt legal. For full requirements (12 total, not including this new clarification), you are strongly encouraged to consult the rulebook – head over to the BDFPA website, and you’ll find Rule Book 2 under the 'Technical' Tab.

The bar grip part of bar grip t-shirts is usually made of silicone. As silicone is
a) stretchy and
b) not cotton or polyester
It’s a non-approved material for t-shirts.

Also important: you can’t wear a bar grip t-shirt turned inside out in an attempt to circumvent this rule!

For completeness, and with regard to rule 1. above, most cotton or poly-blend t-shirts will stretch a bit if you pull on them because of the way that they’re knitted. What refs are looking for at kit check is that your t-shirt doesn’t give an unfair advantage. We’re making sure it’s not made of highly elastic materials like spandex or rubber, and that it’s not a compression t-shirt. In the extreme, these can store elastic energy and work in the same way as, though to a far lesser extent than, a bench shirt.

So there you have it. Bar grip t-shirts are fine to train in, especially if you’re in a commercial gym with poorly knurled bars and vinyl benches. But swap it out for a regular tee on meet day.
