As 2023 wraps up, I’m immensely proud of the small part I've gotten to play in growing the Hartfield media presence. I often tell people there is a Venn diagram in my head of professionalism (good work) and personality (having fun). The sweet spot is where those meet.

When I started in 2019, our streaming team was dads on mics streaming to Facebook. Hartfield and the media team have grown so much since then, with additional volunteers and student workers allowing us to do more and more each year. I'm thankful to work with the incredible @staffordcreative.co and @carolineelucas and under the direction of @paulfryant to foster the growth of our media team. I truly don’t think that there’s any school in Mississippi doing what we do, and if they are, then they probably aren’t having as much fun as us.

The benefit of being at a very young school, still in its growth phase, is that we get to figure out how to do things our way, the Hartfield way. By injecting our own personal touches to the work we do, we create something special that then highlights the personalities of our students. I’ve been very open about the fact that since I took this job in 2019, things have rarely been easy. It’s often been a stressful and confusing job, the nature of things at a school that has only existed for 12 years and has grown much faster than anyone anticipated. But looking back, the work is worth it, and it’s worth figuring out how to do it the weird way that works for Hartfield.

Yeah, I’m going to broadcast a game in a Miami Vice hoodie. Richard is going to put NES Punch Out! Graphics on a post. We’re going to use Roundball Rock and Kurtis Blow on every basketball post. I’m sometimes going to wax a little too poetic. It's going to be a good level of chaos.

But we don’t do this for acclaim, or for attention, or to prove our worth or build a platform. We do this because we take pride in our work, and I’m proud to be a part of this team.

Happy New Year, here are some moments I loved from recent work. I recommend checking @hartfieldsports and @hartfieldacademy for good stuff. 2024 will be fun.

I'm thankful for the work and for the freedom to get a little weird in the process

The 1st pic & cover of the @mpbonline Fine Tuning Magazine gives the date of the next time I'll be on TV as the MC of the @poetryoutloud.co Mississippi competition. The second magazine pic was the first stop on Next Stop, Mississippi's "On The Road Tour", where we checked out this year's Dixie National Rodeo! Our next 2 stops: American Pickleball Tour in Biloxi & the 25th Annual Elvis Festival in Tupelo! #blessed

Today is my last day at MPB so it’s time to look back. I start with the awesome cake my Department got for me yesterday to help celebrate my time. They of course put “It’s gonna be great!” On the cake. It’s a common phrase I say when I’m trying to stay positive or I’m excited about a project. Thank you all for giving me such great memories! I refuse to say goodbye. It’s so long for now. “It’s such a good feeling to know we’re life-long friends.” -Fred Rogers
