A pleasure to help judge and help out @laurabiceps 🎤@magicmike_smith

So cool to see some HUGE lifts and judge some awesome athletes as well as take part with @jayne.lo

It took us 10+ years to finally do a comp together AND she pulls out an equal clean PB at 85kg WITH EASE 🤩

Can’t wait for the next team up! 🤝

I don’t normally do posts like this, but if you made it to the end…

“Your shoulders are manly” is something I heard often when I started going to the gym.

Academia and music, leading to a career in medicine, law or engineering were the only acceptable paths growing up.

Strength and fitness wasn’t on the list.

The comments started early, and they’re still stuck with me today. Too big. Too muscly. Hands too rough. Not what a woman should look like.

It took me until my mid twenties to stop quietly accepting that and start choosing my own way, with strength and fitness included.

It’s really great to see changes in the older generation of Asian culture from social media and other peoples stories, so I know it’s not impossible. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love my family. But I understand these thoughts are deep rooted and incredibly hard to change. Maybe some day mine will be able to understand why this is so important to me.

This is the short version of how I got here, and why showing up Asian and strong matters so much to me.

Hopefully these thoughts can help to encourage another Asian woman in a similar position to still pick up that barbell and start lifting.
