News of the how to get the new album will be hitting you soon — we are just a few weeks away from a release now. I think we'll probably do an early-access release via Patreon or Kickstarter in November, with a proper release on streaming platforms in 2027. Full details coming soon! In the meantime, give us your thoughts on this little clip of one of the tracks in the can, "The Kid from Fame". Want to hear this one on the album, or as a standalone song? Over to you....

When the new record finally comes out, the super niche audience that actually listens to it will notice that there's a lot more of @stelioskmusic (Stelios Kalisperides) and @jayne_musing (Jane Fraser) on it.

The album is a lot more guitar-focused than the first Five Grand Stereo album — I think wrote all but two of the songs on guitar, whereas most of the first album was penned on a piano. But Stelios is an infinitely better guitarist than me, so it was a no brainer putting him fully in charge of axe duties for these sessions.

(Over the course of 13 songs, we only disagreed over one solo.)

And having heard Jane do what she did with the material on the first album, it made complete sense to let everyone hear more of her wonderful voice on the second.

Stelios is an incredible guitarist — I'd say one of the UK's best. And Jane is an incredible vocalist — I've worked with a lot of singers over the years but none has interpreted my music in the way she does. She is brilliant.

Both these fine people make my songs sound so much better than they otherwise would — am very lucky to work with these musicians.

Here they are in full swing on a song called "Young Science." In the solo you hear here, we went for a Revolvery backwards guitar vibe, but achieved the effect through reverse delays rather than reversing any of the actual guitar parts.

For Covid related and other reasons, a lot of Jane's vocals were recorded remotely in Ireland — but this track is an exception. We recorded her singing up in my old attic setup, before I moved into my studio. The pictures you see in this little video are from that session.

Everybody else in the band is doing a sterling job here. I love Michael Kirkland's synth part (played on a weird Italian synth called a Davosilint), Zane Maertens's chunky bass and Ben's ferocious drums. I don't think I'm actually playing anything at all on this song, but I do spoil it now and again by singing in the verses.

And then we have Pete Whitfield, whose fabulous string parts immediately make everything sound better immediately.

Another snippet from the forthcoming @fivegrandstereo album. I felt some slide geetar 🎸 was appropriate for this. Featuring the wonderful Jane Fraser @jayne_musing on vocals. #music #fivegrandstereo #slideguitar

It's Bloomsday today, so to celebrate Leopold Bloom's odyssey in Dublin, here's a clip of (another) little ditty I wrote about the city. Or sort of — it's actually about Greystones, the town near Dublin where I (mostly) grew up. (Or didn't).

Bloom didn't visit Greystones in Ulysses, but he did mention the town: "Got big then. Had to refuse the Greystones concert. My son inside her."

The montage below features some lovely John Hinde postcards of Dublin. None of Greystones I'm afraid — the closest you'll get is a picture of Bray. See if you can spot it.

Despite the Irish theme, I drew inspiration from two of my favourite English songs when writing this — The Beatles' "Two of Us" and The Stone Roses' "Waterfall".

(That's kind of fitting, because Greystones is probably the most English place in Ireland.)

Fun facts about this song: Ben nicked the marching drum pattern fairly directly from "Two of Us", but played it on a snare instead of toms. And it's the only track on the album featuring no keyboard parts.

The wonderful singing comes of course from @jayne_musing

More soon and Happy Bloomsday, Chris

Another snippet from the forthcoming Five Grand Stereo record, which trawls through Dublin in the 1990s. For me and many of my Dublin friends, this involved binging on a lot of Manchester music, in the form of The Stone Roses. This is a little song I wrote about that. Fun fact: Michael Kirkland, our sax, keyboard and pedal steel player, once played on the same bill as the band. Great singing as always from Jane Fraser; and that lovely slide playing is from Stelios Kalisperides.
