Howdy invisible people of the Gram! This is a cover for @jaynem_writes's first installment of her Feathers of Farwood trilogy!
I wanted to evoke the nostalgic feel of old style book covers where they have borders that show glimpses into the story. To get a rustic border, i used peeling gum trees and placed scenes and characters from Farwood in the hollows.
Though set in an Australian landscape, I saturated the colours and stylised the drawings to deviate a little from reality so it's kept in tune with the genre of magical realism.

I've included the chapter headings and also rough sketches of the cover design!

Thank you to Rowena from @riveted_press for her guidance to create this cover and Jayne for sharing wonderful details of the Farwood universe.
(And for printing the artwork on hardcover with spot UV lol)
A big congratulations on being shortlisted for the Speech Pathology award!

I've got another GIVEAWAY for you!! I do love finding a good Aussie book to add to the kids’ bookshelf, and this one caught my attention for a few reasons!

The Feathers of Farwood and the Gripps’ Curse is the debut novel from Queensland author Jayne McIntyre (@jaynem_writes), and it’s a pretty magical one.

The story follows Eva Feather, whose very human dad gets turned into an owl by the mysterious Gripps. Eva and her sisters are whisked away to the strange Australian town of Farwood, where legends, folklore and whispers have a way of coming to life. With her new friend Harvey, Eva sets out to find a cure for her dad, while trying to avoid the Hunters, protect her sisters and uncover the secrets hiding beneath Farwood. Oh, and there’s the small problem of Eva starting to grow feathers herself…

It’s aimed at readers aged 8–13 and is packed with adventure, mystery, Australian wildlife, folklore and a little bit of magic. I love that this isn’t just any fantasy world. The story is steeped in Australian wildlife, bush landscapes and folklore, with the world of Farwood inspired by the Glass House Mountains and Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Even better, it’s the first book in a planned trilogy, so this is just the beginning of Eva’s story!

Jayne has already had some pretty exciting recognition for her debut: The Feathers of Farwood and the Gripps’ Curse has been shortlisted in the 2026 Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year Awards in the 8–10 Years category. Not bad for her first novel!

So, naturally, I have a copy to give away!

🌳📚 Thank you for having me at your debut festival, @pagesintheparksamford ! A lovely celebration of books and stories. It was a bit Amazing Race there at the start as @meredithdownesauthor
and I were battling against the clock and rain to set up our stall tent! But what a promising turnout despite the wet weather. And look at that beautiful Pages in the Park font on blue background - part of the cover of giant books made for it!
