For 25 years, Anawakalmekak has hosted conversations with partners, allies, and relatives to discuss topics ranging from Indigenous Education to investment in Native Language revitalization in public schools to the importance of supporting innovative educational models that center environmental stewardship and Indigenous Self-determination. California State Legislators and Gov Newsom created @ccee_ca initiative to launch the Secondary School Redesign pilot project to identify the most innovative and effective educational models for public schools. California collaborative for Educational Excellence chose Anawakalmekak’s Learning Lands Collaborative partnership as a potential template for delivering on the promise of quality, equitable education for every student.

Get to know Carter: SKA MUSIC

Carter is a beloved member of the OC Ska scene. He literally grew up watching Suburban Legends play at Disneyland Tomorrowland Terrace . This band and this scene welcomed Carter whole heartedly. Carter loved music and dancing. We had a benefit concert “Carterpalooza” featuring Suburban Legends, Hooray For Our Side, and Starpool in August 2016. A night we will never ever forget.

Members of local bands came together to play his Celebration of Life. There is no scene like the OC Ska scene. We love our ska family!

Since the pandemic, California has made a historic investment of billions in community schools as a model to remove the barriers to success for all students. In 2025, California also set aside funding to launch a Secondary Schools Redesign Pilot Project across the state to identify schools that are rethinking and reorganizing secondary school design. Anawakalmekak’s Learning Lands Collaborative was selected as one such model to help lead the way for community- based schools as part of California Collaborative for Educational Excellence’s (@ccee_ca ). Our educational model has established a community-based Indigenous ecosystem grounded in Native Language revitalization, environmental stewardship, and Indigenous Self-determination. The results speak for themselves, high levels of cultural wellness, 100% graduation and among the highest rates of college readiness in the state.

While this year’s state budget has largely been settled, there are still opportunities to invest in #IndigenousEducation in ways the state never has before. Will state legislators ensure that historic investment in schools include #indigenous students and #nativelanguages too? Can a community school truly redesign education if Indigenous People’s educational self-determination and tribal sovereignty is excluded or overlooked?

Since the pandemic, California has invested billions of dollars in what proponents call a “community school” model designed to reach all students. Next year, California schools will receive an additional $1 billion to support community school initiatives. Today, we ask ourselves, how can all students be engaged if schools do not meaningfully engage tribal education offices, indigenous community organizations, or even American Indian Education Centers through this model? Now, schools and districts across the state, have an opportunity to change this neglect and uplift American Indian rights to educational self-determination by partnering with American Indian tribes, education departments, and urban Indigenous community organizations.

The investment by a California into the pedagogy and praxis of Indigenous resurgence education is not simply about “replacing the pillars of factory model schooling for new pillars of a more gentle form of setter schooling” it is much deeper

So Cal Ska Family a few of us are organizing a ska picnic. This will take place at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley. We will meet near the cross streets of Euclid and Heil. You will want to look for the black and white balloons. We will have a pop up for shade and there will be a grill for cooking. Bring your chairs, food, drinks and whatever you think will make for a fun afternoon at the park. We spend so much time doing business together, we thought we should party together. I just wanted to say a MASSIVE thank you to everyone who came out and celebrated, wished me a happy birthday and shared their love with me yesterday. I am truly, a very fucking lucky lady to have so many beautiful people in my life 🥹🥰🫶

TLDR: I’m really fucking grateful. Time to cuddle my hubby and the dogs 💕
I’ll be honest, when it was time to leave home for this tour I was in a bit of a mental health slump. Happens to the best of us. But being out on the road with my friends, seeing family, getting to watch @fishbonesoldier every night, laughing until I cried, and finishing it out with a killer hometown show really filled my cup. It was like someone hitting the reset button. Grief is never finished. It comes in waves. But this little tour really helped me gain perspective I’d lost sight of for a bit.
And now it’s time to go home and cuddle my dogs and my incredible husband (@willyoulookatthat . Without him cheering me on and supporting me through these tours, none of it would be possible. He is my rock.
I’m gonna take a little social media break as we take our camper van and poodle around the UK for a few weeks.
