Hot Rod Circuit - “Supersad” (09.13.26)

Soooo - YES!!! I got to see Hot Rod Circuit this past Saturday night and it was a great … and interesting for a few reasons. I will get into that later.

HRC is an amazing band. I loved all their albums from ‘99-‘07 and saw their farewell tour in 2007 (I think) at the Middle East Upstairs in Cambridge, MA - such a good show touring on such an amazing album - their last one in 2007 “The Underground…” which never received its due …and had magnificent pedal steel action! My affection for their music has grown over the years and I think their songwriting, hooks, guitar work, melodies, style, and ethos has held up better than almost all their 00s punk/emo/rock contemporaries. Plus, if you listened to the amazing Vagrant retrospective podcast by Matt Pryor a few years ago - almost every band said HRC was their fav Vagrant band for music and to hang with (GUK, STD, Dashboard, etc) a true band’s band that should have definitely been bigger. Plus, Andy’s work in Say Anything and the guys in other bands was always fun. AND most importantly - they are from and always repped Connecticut (my home state) - one of the few bands to do so … even though some of them had moved from Alabama.

So 19 years later and a lot of escalating nostalgia and I was psyched to finally see them live again. BUT they were opening for Streetlight Manifesto … which was a bit strange. I booked it up to MD to arrive just in time for their 8pm set and paid a lot of money for a “ska” show. And I worked my way right up to about 15ft from the stage … and holy crap I was like “what the?”. The place was already totally full of prob 1,300+ people and almost no one on the floor knew HRC or knew the words - I saw just a few. I’m sure there were more interspersed around and on the balcony.

I was rocking out and was singing all the words. There were a lot of young people there that seemed to like it … but I expected HRC to have a bigger part of the crowd - they are such legends. I imagine some of the old school fans didn’t want to pay the pretty penny to see them just open. But I loved it; some of the guys in the band could definitely see me singing (I am too tall) and it was great to support them…. (Cont)
