Still processing the most amazing two weeks @haystack_school open studio residency where I had the opportunity to be the visiting woodshop technician. I’m beyond grateful for the two weeks in Maine with the most amazing people. The energy and play with mediums was truly so special. Everyone was sharing techniques and processes and it became a space of exploration. I’m so honored to have been a part of such an amazing cohort. I even had a little time of my own to make some small brushes with ceramic inlays. @nintando and I also collaborated on a squiggle brush (second image) that sold in the live auction. Blessed by the Haystack magic and so appreciative to all of the wonderful staff and chefs who cultivate a once in a lifetime experience 💫

I’m so happy (truly riding waves of joy) to have spent the last two weeks at @haystack_school for Open Studio Residency 2026. It was life changing in many ways. Working alongside my fellow residents and Haystack’s amazing staff meant working within a constant current of ideas, energy, joy, laughter, care, intention… I leave these two weeks with new lifelong friends and collaborators, but also with greater care for ideas about craft within my own work and communities, and with big hope to carry some of the communal energy we built together forward in my work and life. Thank you, Haystack, and till all of our meandering paths cross again!! ❤️❤️❤️

Thank you @haystack for 2 weeks of utopia 💫

For the past few years, I've been on what I call a craft school journey, attending, teaching, & creating workshops at institutions across the country. Although my work is deeply rooted in a traditional craft passed down through generations, I once shied away from the term and still find myself grappling with the blurred line between craft and art.

Through these experiences, I've come to appreciate the role craft schools play in fostering communities built around the sharing of knowledge, skills, & experience. They create spaces where everyone – from professional artists to curious beginners – can participate in something fundamentally human: learning from one another, sharing ideas, and passing on knowledge through making. The Open Studio Residency invites 50 artists alongside highly skilled technicians across Haystack's studios (wood, blacksmithing, fine metals, ceramics, fiber, graphics, and the fabrication lab), creating an environment where experimentation is encouraged and stepping outside your usual practice becomes possible.

While we were there, a PBS crew interviewed some of us for an episode of Craft in America celebrating Haystack's 75th year. The interview challenged me to articulate why spaces like this continue to matter.
One thing I've come to recognize is that the emphasis is rarely on the finished object itself. Instead, it is based on the knowledge gained through making: the techniques learned, the questions asked, the mistakes made, and the skills passed from one person to another. The object becomes a record of that learning rather than the sole measure of success. A mindset that feels fundamentally different from the gatekeeping and competitiveness encountered elsewhere. Here, knowledge is shared freely, and making becomes less about individual achievement and more about collective growth.

Thank you to all the artists, staff, cooks, and technicians who made this residency possible. Thank you for the gift of uninterrupted making, experimentation, conversation, and connection. May we all carry a piece of this creative utopia home to pass on.
