As from October 29th my book Get Into Costume published by Bloomsbury, will be in print! I’m very excited as it’s the culmination of many years of writing, re-writing, (re-thinking), editing, editing again - and again, approaching and chatting to some of the costume professionals whose work I love and admire (the best bit!), picture research, picture permissions (getting some but not others), updating, revising, checking, amending, agonizing over tiny (but important) details - and finally it got done and I’m really pleased with how it’s turned out - and I think it does what it says on the tin!

Most of all, this book has a purpose. Remembering what it was like when I started out, and having worked with so many work-experience students, trainees and newbies, I’ve seen how some people have gone from strength to strength and have forged amazing careers, and others who have dropped out for different reasons. Costume is not an easy profession to break into and it can be very challenging to work in too. But it can also be wonderful!

When I started out in props at the Royal Opera House, I saw one of the older ballerinas (Antoinette Sibley) in a rehearsal room, ploughing her experience into the next generation (Darcey Bussell), and that stuck with me. I thought it should be the same with costume and that’s what I decided to do - in book form. The contents of the book is designed to help people starting out to understand that they are going into, the pros, the cons, the practicalities, the reality - no theory, as well as all the wonderful aspects of costume where it applies to actors, singers, dancers, stunts and background and their characters in all their many decorative and more everyday forms.
