Chelsea Film Festival: Betta Fish On The Move

It was an absolutely full day. One we anticipated being extremely busy. This is the kind of day we dreamt of. Screening at Chelsea Film Festival in New York where Betta Fish was shot by an amazing cast and crew… then off to screen in South Africa.

We had limited time during the week to prepare so all the packing, last minute grabs, saying see ya later to loved ones took up hours before the big screening day. We rushed to the Chelsea Film Festival lugging our heavy suitcases but with so much excitement.

Thank you @chelseafilmfestival for having Betta Fish be a part of 2026 selections!
The films in our block were absolutely stunning. @ingrid_jeanbaptiste you were absolutely phenomenal and you all have curated such a wonderful festival that continues to expand. We are honored to say we screened at Chelsea.

Shout out to all of our friends, family, new and old supporters who showed up for us. We are so happy to be on this journey with you all.

@shonshine__ you the GOAT for airport transportation 💐 iykyk what that means in NYC

The first staged reading of Black Creek Risin’ NYC Premiere. Whew. This cast. These words. This direction. I’m in DEEP gratitude. I will hold Cat Jones dear to my heart and promise to keep telling her truth.

@itsladarrion your words filled @59e59 theatre this weekend and the whole audience could feel EVERY part of the story. My dear friend, collaborator, playwright, THANK YOU. Every story you write amazes me every time & I am forever grateful to be apart of your work, always. Thank you for trusting me. 💐

@iammarishkasp your direction stretched us as artists. Challenged us to see the world beyond music stands. Trusted us enough to PLAY! A 12 hour rehearsal the day before. 7 hours before showtime. & 210% was given, because that’s what you gave US. Thank you beyond words. 💐

To this cast - @feliciaboswell , @mr.callycal , @jdlyke , @thenoralove_ I am inspired and so glad to have worked with you all. My heart is FULL.

BCR we will meet again, very soon. claiming it. ❤️

My play Black Creek Risin’ made its debut as a staged reading in New York City this past Monday.

I’m loss for words. Because this play has honestly been collecting dust on my computer for a few years because I lost hope in it.

It’s been rejected so many times I just got tired. But seeing these actors: @feliciaboswell, @mr.callycal, @thenoralove_ @nicolette.ellis @jdlyke bring these characters to life and the fearless direction from @iammarishkasp reawakened something for me with this play.

This entire process had some road blocks that tried to stop us, but this army of artists was ready for war.

Just know the creek gon’ rise on Broadway very soon.

🔥 BIG NEWS: CALVIN THOMPSON JOINS BLACK CREEK RISIN’ 🔥

I’m thrilled to announce that @mr.callycal will be stepping into the role for our upcoming New York City staged reading of Black Creek Risin’.

Guy joins an incredible company featuring @feliciaboswell , @jdlyke , @thenoralove_ , and @nicolette.ellis , under the direction of @iammarishkasp .

And while Sir Keith David will not be appearing in the reading due to a scheduling conflict, I’m incredibly proud to share that he remains attached to Black Creek Risin’ as a Producer and Talent. His belief in this story and his continued involvement means the world to me.

Presented by the @theatrenec, this reading marks an exciting next chapter for the play as we begin the search for its world-premiere home.

Also shoutout to @59e59 for their wonderful help as well!

See you soon, NYC!

Black Creek Risin'. Mama Jakes. Literal fire in my belly for this one. Can't wait to tell this story. 🔥🖤

Set deep in the Louisiana bayou at the dawn of Prohibition, Black Creek Risin' follows Mama Jakes, a formidable Black woman determined to protect the juke joint she built with her own hands. As Prohibition threatens her livelihood, she turns to bootlegging to keep her family and community afloat. But when old love resurfaces, dangerous secrets are revealed, and violence erupts, she must decide whether to continue carrying the weight of everyone around her - or finally choose herself.

Blending Southern Gothic storytelling with the sounds of blues and jazz, Black Creek Risin' is a sweeping story of love, legacy, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the Black South.

The staged reading features an acclaimed cast led by Emmy Award winner and Tony Award nominee Keith David @silverthroat, alongside Felicia Boswell @feliciaboswell (2x Helen Hayes Award winner, Emmy winner, Grammy Award nominee), Jason Lyke @jdlyke (Law & Order, American Soul), Nora Love @thenoralove_ as Hoochie, and Los Angeles-based actress Nicolette Ellis @nicolette.ellis .

The Negro Ensemble Company, Inc., in association with Blackgical Productions LLC, MPTP Productions INTL, will present a special staged reading of Black Creek Risin', a new Southern drama written by New York Times bestselling author and playwright @itsladarrion, MPTP Productions INTL, and directed by @iammarishkasp. The reading will take place Monday, August 17, 2026, at 7:00 PM at 59E59 Theaters 'Theatre B' (59 East 59th Street, New York, NY 10022).
