Today marks FIVE years of Digital Sabbath. Looking back, it’s the people that made the journey so special. To our crews, agencies, clients and collaborators, thank you from the bottom of our hearts 💕.

How it started -> how it’s going. The top photo was taken in Hong Kong with a 3D print of an early Communicator form factor study. We were carrying it around to judge the size and get a feel for how it might fit into our lives. The small white paper strip was a makeshift concept for an LED light that wrapped around the top edge of the phone so you could see it from all angles (before we came up with the Signal Light). The bottom photo was taken this week, in the exact same spot but with a working Communicator. Amazing to see it come to life from idea to reality.

At the time we were exploring volume keys on the right-hand side in a more traditional spot found on Android phones. We knew we had to have a notification light — and we wanted to design it in a way it could be visible whether the phone was sitting face up or face down. So had had this idea for a wrap around LED. We hadn’t yet had the breakthrough to combine the Signal Light and Prompt Key into a single button under your thumb.

While the design may look familiar, Communicator has evolved a lot since those early studies. The volume keys and kill switch are now on the left-hand side, within reach of your index finger and ring fingers. The curved chin provides a comfortable spot to rest your thumb and a confident place to grip the phone - plus it helps protect the keys when face down. We’ve added a front-facing speaker (one of 2 speakers) and microphone (one of 3) into the chin as well. The power button was moved to the top right edge so you can reach up and lock with your index finger. There are too many carefully considered design decisions to count.

Communicator colors are getting dialled in! Come behind the scenes with us 👉🏼

We spent this week at the paint factory refining colors, materials and finishes for Communicator.

The Smoke body ships this this gorgeous Dune back cover.

Onyx ships with a matching Onyx cover. Look at the way the light accentuates the subtle curve of the chin.

Clover was the hardest to nail, but we love where we landed.

CMF is hard. We were obsessing over details down to the size of the particles in the paint that give the mid frame its texture and how the finish reflects light.

Different paint processes and gloss levels impact the feel of the Charging Covers. We want Communicator to feel inviting to the touch, and give you confidence in your hand.

We also spent the time together reviewing UX and UI in the software. Here Hofer is talking about aligning Home Screen icons to the grid created by hardware elements like columns of keys and the front facing camera.

Being on the ground at the paint factory was a gift. We could prototype new colors, test different finishes, levels of sheen, roughnesses, and paint processes in real-time. We would discuss and idea and get it back from the paint shop in a few hours. We studied hundreds of samples.

BlackBerry unchained us from our desks and allowed us to take action out in the real world. Communicator builds on that ethos for a new era of modern communications.
