I woke up in the dark again.
I couldn’t tell who I was.
I reached across the bed and found my wife.
I reach for her like I am looking for my keys.
In a panic.
Then I remember.
It happens every day.
I give myself a second as my brain has been up for hours.
It starts reading me my lists.
The engine starts.
Like a cold tractor on a winter morning.
The engine Revs.

The last day of the year.
2023

Age gives way to youth.

Numbers clicked by.
15 years of the tasting room
15 years of my son
19 years of my daughter
20 years of making wine.
25 years farming.
25 years of marriage
45 years being a brother
47 years being a son.
50+ lbs lost from my body.

I woke up confusing excitement for anxiety.
I often do.
No.
I always do.

When I look back, I am filled with warmth.
I wouldn’t change a thing.
Yet when I look forward.
It is into the dark.
2024
Is a dark forest full of trees
There is no light.
Just a direction.
Forward.

Tomorrow the sprint begins.
Into the dark.
Blind faith.
Sprinting between the trees into the dark.
Forward.

Lighting the way.
Clearing a path.
Preparing the way for those yet to come.

I meditate on the past.
I pray for my children.
The lights in this world they have become.

I pray for my mother, my brother, this farm, this land, the fruit, this farmily of people, people who read what I write, and those that tell me to continue….
Forward.

And I begin my daily sprint through the dark forest
Forward.

Out of duty,
Out of honor,
Out of purpose,
I run.

To light the way.

My whole life, I’ve wanted to be, older…
I thought it would get easier.
Yes experience helps.

But it still comes down to faith.
Faith in tomorrow.
Faith in the next step.
Not by sight
By Faith

So into the next year we all run.
Into the unknown.

Let us light the path for those to follow.

Let us honor the past and prepare the way for those yet to come.

When the rhetorical voice speaks to you
“For whom shall I send”

Swallow hard. Tie your boots, light your candle,
And respond, in total terror,
Here, am I, Send Me.

Drink the good stuff tonight.

Tomorrow we begin the 2024
Dead Sprint.
Into the Forest.

Into the Future

RIP Andre Keith Braugher (July 1, 1962 – December 11, 2023) was an American actor.
.

The immensely talented Braugher was best known for his roles as Detective Frank Pembleton in the acclaimed Homicide: Life on the Street (1993–1999), as used car salesman and family man Owen Thoreau Jr., in Men of a Certain Age (2009–2011), and as Captain Raymond Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013–2021).
.
For his television work, Braugher received two Primetime Emmy Awards from 11 nominations, as well as two Golden Globe Award nominations.
.
He also had supporting roles in such feature films such as Glory (1989), Primal Fear (1996), City of Angels (1998), Frequency (2000), Duets (2000), Poseidon (2006), The Mist (2007), Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), Salt (2010), The Gambler (2014) and She Said (2022).
.
Braugher passed away on December 11, 2023, at the age of 61, following a brief illness. He leaves behind three sons, and his wife of 32 years Amy Brabson, who co-starred with him in Homicide: Life on the Street.
