They told us “nobody wants to watch a 9/11 movie.”

For years, the industry said this story was too heavy. When it was rejected, I spiraled into deep depression and self-doubt. I refused to self-distribute because, deep down, I wasn’t happy with the cut. I had listened to too many outside voices, allowed the original vision to become diluted, and cut out crucial scenes.

So, I ran away from it… for years.

I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was doing exactly what the firefighter in my film was doing—running away from myself and refusing to face the truth.

Years later, the smoke cleared. I looked back at the raw footage and realized just how incredible the material we captured truly was. I was inspired to stop running, face the work, and re-edit the film into the definitive Director’s Cut it was always meant to be.

I Was There is not about the towers falling—it is about a firefighter at war with PTSD, survivor’s guilt, and his agonizing fight to find grace.

Just like the character running from his trauma—and just like I was running from releasing this film—we all eventually have to stop running.

So beyond excited, proud and inspired to have gotten to go support my dear friend @yomtoob who was a producer on a documentary called "The Auntie Sewing Squad Resistance Playbook" at the 2026 LA Asian Pacific Film Festival! Look at Lila's face!!! Beaming and beautiful! 😍❤️

Congratulations on not only a powerful film but also to all of the people who are affiliated with this documentary and story. Especially the group of folks this documentary follows, you are truly inspirational.

"The Auntie Sewing Squad Resistance Playbook" directed by Valerie Soe, documents a grassroots collective of primarily BIPOC women who, led by artist Kristina Wong, sewed over 400,000 masks for vulnerable communities during the pandemic. It highlights their work as a "mutual aid", anti-racist, and feminist response to government failures in providing PPE.

Documentaries like this and sharing stories like this shine a light, breaks barriers and connects us all as people. That connection, that community, that humanity, that love is the way. Not this hate, fear, greed and bitterness that has been allowed to flourish by ignorance and sinister players.

The work isn't over for all of us. We all have our part to play and weight to lift for a better country and world. But I will sleep slightly easier tonight reminded that there are still so many people like all these Aunties in the world and in this country. That gives me hope that humanity still lives, breathes, loves and kicks some major A$$ in the face of the darkness.

There is some good in this world, and it is worth fighting for. Remember that. ❤️
