The unburnt effigy.

Throughout 2020, any feather I found I placed into the back of my phone case and as the year passed the collection grew and became a reference to my wanderings.

The collection includes two electric blue Jay feathers, one found in Dorset and the other in Scotland, and a feather from a blackbird killed by a peregrine falcon in front of me whilst running the coast path above home cove only two weeks ago.

We had decided to celebrate the new year by saluting its first sunrise with fireside coffees and swims, and as an acknowledgement to the new chapter we were to each burn an effigy, and the beautiful array of feathers seemed like a fitting sacrifice. I set their points in candle wax and bound them in cotton ready for the morning.

On arriving at the cove I was aware how lucky I was to have had the 2020 I did, and aside from some high grade self sabotage and a fractured spine it’d been a good year and this totem of my travels was something to be cherished. Making a swift u-turn I placed the feathers in my pocket and burnt my Christmas tree instead.
