I’m so excited to share this with you.

My new song “If I Could Breathe Underwater,” which features @maryoverthere on harp, is out today! The video is directed by @jennihensler with cinematography by @nickfancher and @jennihensler. Players @milkyburgess , @jessetchandler @grantmartinmusic and is mixed by @seffffffy , mastered by @heba_kadry , engineered by @jesselnewport at @clubroarrecording

The Path of the Clouds is out October 29th on
@sacredbones and @bella_union

When I wrote “If I Could Breathe Underwater,” I was contemplating the possibilities of possessing various superhuman powers: teleportation, shapeshifting, energy projection, aquatic breathing, extrasensory perception, and time travel to name a few. As a lyrical device, I married those powers with events in my life, wondering if and how they could change the past or predict the future. Musically, the song grew into a lush, cinematic composition with a pulsing rhythm and serpentine bass hooks. I loved working on the melody for this song and bringing the choruses to their climaxes.

Jenni Hensler on her video, "The story behind this video was something that came to me immediately the first time that I listened to the track. This song took on many meanings to me and I love that about it. How beauty and tragedy collide… Dreaming of having supernatural powers to change reality and have the ability to live and breathe underwater. It could also speak to the duality of existence. That we all have inner personas or shadow selves, and how we envision those different masks we wear. How we may long to live as the most magical of those masks. I chose to make something that touched on the idea of duality and the inner persona. Knowing that this part of you exists. To connect to the two worlds.
This was shot on 16mm film (with the exception of the underwater shots). I love creating with analog film. I feel that classic cinema really captures a nostalgic feeling and a dreamy quality that no other medium can. I wanted to stay as close as I could with classic editing styles, so I used paint in water techniques to color parts of the film." Link to the video :

This photo was taken by @jennihensler at night recently after some major aquarium experiments with inks and dyes, after a very long and hot video shoot with @nickfancher and Jenni. That day, I remembered my fear of drowning and had a realization as to why I can’t drive over bridges anymore. I let Jenni drape me in fabric like she does so well (she also does many many other things gorgeously). I can’t wait for you to see and hear the next song and video off of The Path of the Clouds, directed by Jenni with cinematography by the amazing @nickfancher , who took my portraits for this album.
Thank you @sacredbones @bella_union. @mitchwhales for making such an amazing video for Bessie, Did You Make It (link in bio) . I’m proud of the weeks I spent on that owl animation and the paratrooper and the oar. Thanks so much for listening all these years🖤 here is a link to the video we made:
